2. The Biltmore Estate
The Biltmore Estate, in Asheville, North Carolina, is the largest privately owned residence in the United States. It was built between 1889 and 1895 for the industrialist George Washington Vanderbilt II. The home is truly massive, at over 170,000 square feet. It is still owned by descendants of the Vanderbilt’s and is one of the most famous examples of the Gilded Age mansions of the US.
The Biltmore Estate is a French chateau-style mansion. The home is so massive brick factories were built on-site just to aid in the enormous construction project. The development required the labor of thousands of stonemasons, bricklayers, and more.
