Housekeepers Share the Strangest Experiences They Had With Guests

Housekeepers don’t get a lot of credit for the work they do. Underappreciated and underpaid, you wouldn’t believe what they witness. Hotels are mini-purgatories, with people from all walks of life coming and going … and leaving behind things. Here are some of the most outrageous stories shared by the housekeepers who had to clean up after these awful people at the end of the day. Be aware that some of these situations are gross and nauseating, so if you have a weak stomach, you may want to skip a few.

Reddit

50. Being Afraid Of A Needle For Legitimate Reasons

It’s a good thing this housekeeper’s supervisor cared enough to take them to the hospital. That needle jab could have ended an entirely different way in any other circumstances. Thankfully, this wasn’t the result of someone being careless or inconsiderate, and there was no harm in the end. But maybe next time, this kid’s parent should exercise more caution in cleaning up after their kid so that other people like this housekeeper don’t have to endure another health scare. It’s also a good thing that this housekeeper didn’t decide to take legal matters into their hands.

Reddit

49. A Brush With A Famous Person In The Middle of Chaos

To think that this person’s mother felt that she would have to deal with some rowdy crowd making a mess and destroying property and ended up meeting one of the most famous musicians of this century. Undoubtedly, her mood completely changed when she discovered who had rented out (and trashed) the hotel room and even walked away with some memorabilia! At least it was nice of Meatloaf to pay for all of the damages and ensure that he kept the peace the rest of the night.

Reddit

48. Some Stories Are Tamer Than Others

After reading the above stories, you’d think it would only worsen from here on out, but some stories are less exciting than others. This housekeeper was only confronted with wrappers and open cans of beer… which meant at least someone was having a good time. A little practical joke never hurts anyone, but it can be more than annoying when it happens at work, especially after you’ve exercised your patience with people who ended up not deserving it in the first place. At least this was the worst this poster faced. Keep reading for more crazy stories about housekeepers.

Reddit

47. It’s Always Fair To Blame The Cat… Until It’s Not

This poor housekeeper! We don’t know how anyone would think that the story they gave the hotel would be believable… or why they would even continue to stay in these conditions! Not to mention that everyone knows you can’t flush sanitary products and certain toiletries! And if it really was the cat, why would they stay in a bad covered in its feces? If you’d clean up after your pet at home, you should do the same at a hotel as a common courtesy. We’re sure that no one believes these guys’ story one bit.

Reddit

46. An Unexpected Gift Left Behind

So far, you’ve probably gotten the gist of where these stories are going to go, but this story more than likely took you for a doozy! Maybe the occupiers were drunk and happened to have a can of paint on them… or this was some kind of elaborate practical joke. We have no idea how the hotel dealt with this scenario. Being optimistic, the paint could have been easy to remove from the seat. On the other side of the story, maybe they had to replace the entire toilet together, which would have cost them a lot of money.

Reddit

45. A Woman In Distress

Although a strange scenario, what else could the sister have done? Being only a housekeeper, it’s not really her job to take care of other people, but the humane side of her should have probably stayed with this poor woman. We hope she got the help she needed or is at least okay today, but the sister was more likely spooked about finding a woman sitting on the floor crying, with no clothes on at that. And she still didn’t even get to clean the room. Oops!

Reddit

44. Lack Of Common Courtesy Or Just Disgusting?

We all understand how overwhelming having a child can be, but if you’re staying in this kind of filth with a child, it is just downright disgusting, even if it’s at a hotel. Unfortunately, housekeeping couldn’t teach them a lesson and make them clean it up themselves because that would have been the perfect icing on top of the cake. Our best guess is that these occupiers didn’t even leave behind a tip to smooth things over with the housekeeper for the horrible mess they abandoned.

Reddit

43. Glitter Is The Forbidden Ingredient

Glitter gets into everything, and trying to clean it up is a nightmare. It only takes one idiot (or, in this story, a pair of idiots) to ruin things for everyone, and no guests likely used the hot tub after that night. Sure, it might have looked cool that first night, but they didn’t have to deal with the repercussions afterward with vacuuming and lint-rolling all of that glitter off of everything. You can be sure that the glitter got into more places than just the tub. Keep reading for more crazy stories about housekeepers.

Reddit

42. It’s Not Good When It’s Snowing Inside

The above user shared another story of a mess. This is clearly another reason children shouldn’t be left unsupervised in hotel rooms. It was baffling to think that the parents even returned and didn’t do anything about it afterward. And from the sounds of it, not only was it a horror to clean up, but their little stunt also ruined the HVAC in the room, which likely meant that the hotel had to have it replaced. Fingers crossed that they charged the parents for destroying their property because they probably won’t leave their children unsupervised.

Reddit

41. Just When You Think Guests Are Being Courteous…

Housekeepers are always surprised to find a room that’s already been made, or at least the dirty linens have been removed from the bed so that they can be easily collected for washing. But what started as a pleasant surprise quickly became a disaster and almost gave this housekeeper a heart attack. Not to mention the mess they had to clean up afterward from this horrible avian-related prank. The unanswered question is: how did the guests catch that pigeon in the first place?

Reddit

40. The Lengths Some People Will Go To Have Fun

This story is long, but it is quite jaw-dropping with each subsequent paragraph. It’s one thing to enjoy your stay in a hotel room, but when you’re getting illegal activities involved, the story can only get wilder from there on out. By the end of the story, you probably just want a shower and a hot mug of tea to wipe away the visual imagery of the hotel room as described. You probably don’t want to think about what the room smelled like either…

Reddit

39. A Father Of The Cloth Losing His Faith

Maybe this Catholic priest was having some kind of existential crisis when he pulled this off… or perhaps he wasn’t a real man of God, to begin with, and thought he could get away with his actions. Left unattended, this guy managed to break a few of the main rules of his faith and then left behind a “gift” that no one wanted. We hope the man didn’t hurt himself too severely by smashing his head against a table but that he also asked for forgiveness at his religious conference.

Reddit

38. A Housekeeper Gets A Shocking Surprise

Although this isn’t a story from a housekeeper, these guests certainly surprised one who was just coming in to clean their room. It’s a funny story all around, and they probably learned their lesson for next time that the “Do Not Disturb” sign exists for a reason. But if this was the worst they did to the housekeeper, they probably were pretty good guests. The upside to this is that they got the housekeeper’s heart rate up, not only from the scare but also from the cardio of escaping.

Reddit

38. It’s Supposed To Stay Inside Your Body

A booty call that ended badly? What were these people really getting into? No one wants to think about the ramifications of what could have caused so much redness to end up on the bed, but if this hotel owner wanted to keep his business, he likely had to throw the whole mattress away for safety reasons. It’s too bad that no one could get the full story out of that couple either, but maybe it’s for the best that no one knows. Keep reading for more crazy stories about housekeepers.

Reddit

37. Protecting Your Food From Thieves

To be fair, if we had a bad experience with people stealing food off our plate, we would want to put our favorite burrito into the hotel safe as well. It’s a shame that they didn’t get to eat it in the end since they left it behind. This guest was probably confused about why his “microwave” was taking so long to warm up his meal and gave up on it eventually. The downside to this story is that the burrito likely had to be thrown away. A waste of delicious food!

Reddit

36. Taken For All He’s Worth

This guy probably thought he was going to have a night to remember… and he was absolutely right. Just not the way he expected. A hotel room for an entire night with two women? It makes you wonder how long that guy would have been in that hotel room by himself if he hadn’t thought to create a noise complaint. Of course, someone could have mistaken that for… particular activity and not called the front desk. He probably didn’t make this mistake ever again, with how much embarrassment he must have faced being found by hotel security.

Reddit

35. Leaving The Place Better Than They Booked It

To think that you rent out a beachfront room to someone, and you find it in a much cleaner condition than you expect. These guests really went above and beyond the housekeeper’s and owner’s expectations. They even fixed some things on the broken property, saving the owner a lot of money on having to do so in the future. Instead of leaving a review on the hotel, the hotel owner should leave a five-star review for these guests! Hotels would practically be begging to have these people stay.

Reddit

34. Talk About Creepy Decorations

You want to set up plenty of things for the first night you spend together as husband and wife, but this story really takes the cake. Does a groom really want to experience looking into his father-in-law’s eyes while doing the deed? It might seem funny at first, but that’s definitely going to stick with them for the rest of their lives. Let’s just hope that they didn’t share the story of this incident with the rest of their families because they probably won’t find it as amusing as they did.

Reddit

33. Looking For A Ring, Found Something Else Instead

If you followed the same train of thought as we did, you would assume that the woman was slightly hysterical for losing a prized ring in her hotel room. Because it’s doubtful that if you leave behind something in a hotel room, you’re not going to get it back. However, when this person working in hotel maintenance realized that something was up when the husband and son started following them up to the room. And it seemed they had every reason to because of what was found.

Reddit

32. Getting Away Scot Free

Not a housekeeper, but this Reddit user had plenty of stories to share. This first one is definitely jaw-dropping, just because of how creative this guest was at getting away from a man she obviously tricked into her room and had his money and car stolen. Not to mention being handcuffed to a bed for a full day. How did this guy even go to the bathroom? Maybe we don’t want to think about the answer to that question at all. Keep reading for more crazy stories about housekeepers.

Reddit

31. When A Celebrity Comes To Town

This Reddit user continued with another story, sharing how Drew Barrymore stayed in one of their hotel rooms, and this guest decided to be creepy about it. Don’t exercise your imagination with this one with what he wanted to do with the bedsheets and towels, but all you have to know is that it’s pretty gross. Thankfully, the hotel manager didn’t want to give this guy what he wanted, despite the amount of money offered for said linens. Then he dared to leave a bad review? He’s just lucky he didn’t get the cops called on him.

Reddit

30. Leaving Behind A Lot of Dangerous Valuables

Guns alone are expensive to buy, not to mention difficult to get depending on which state you live in. So when you’re traveling with this many guns, you’d think someone would keep them all in check so that they wouldn’t forget any of them… right? But these weren’t forgotten; the owner was right downstairs having breakfast. Why would he brazenly leave his firearms out like this for anyone to see? Much less, anyone who came into the room could just steal them. The police were called, sure, but we have no idea if the guy got arrested for carrying so much weaponry.

Reddit

29. Firing Housekeepers For Good Reasons

This Reddit user shared a story about three housekeepers who got fired for incompetency, but that’s not what this story is about. Who thinks to scrape at a mysterious stain on a bedsheet and try to taste its contents? Even as children, we’re taught not to put our fingers in our mouths after touching something we don’t understand. Apparently, this guy didn’t get the memo. On top of that, once they learned what it was, they didn’t even follow through with getting the mattress destroyed; they just flipped it over and pretended as if there wasn’t a problem.

Reddit

28. Celebrating Is Great, But At Whose Expense?

It’s all fine and dandy to have a party in your hotel room (as long as you’re not breaking stuff and disturbing other people around you) but making a mess is against common courtesy. Although no glitter was used in this celebration, it used the next worst thing: confetti. Imagine trying to clean up tiny bits of paper all over the floor, between the bedsheets, under the bed… Then wet confetti being stuck to the floor made the situation worse. Talk about inconsiderate guests!

Reddit

27. An Entire Day To Destroy Everything

When guests make a complaint, you will go out of your way to try and make their stay more comfortable. So when a couple didn’t like the state of the fridge, this person’s friend went in to clean it spic and span. So how did this friend get repaid? The couple covered everything in fecal matter… we refrain from asking if it was theirs or that of another animal. But how they managed to pull this off in just a day is baffling. The ‘why’ is also highly confusing.

Reddit

26. Leaving Things Where They Lie

It can be disconcerting as a housekeeper to go into a hotel room and find something that you shouldn’t normally be there. This person was nice enough not to report it to hotel management and simply left the guests’ “belonging” where it was. In response, they left them a very nice tip as a thank you, so it was definitely worth it in the end. Some people expect some level of privacy in a hotel room, and although this might not have gotten them into serious trouble, the guests were probably glad that it didn’t get taken instead.

Reddit

25. Not A Hotel But Just As Bad

If there’s one thing worse than cleaning up after adults in a hotel room, it’s cleaning up after college students. Even though they should act like adults with some amount of responsibility, this story is a prime example of the kind of antics they can get up to when left to their own devices. A completely trashed room, a small supply of weed, and graffiti on the wall? Sadly, they should’ve been made to clean it up afterward but weren’t. They definitely weren’t taught a lesson. Keep reading for more crazy stories about housekeepers.

Reddit

24. Not What Bed Frames Are Supposed To Be Used For

It’s probably a given that “things” happen in hotel rooms, but this party definitely went to the extreme. The evidence didn’t stop at a wild gathering, but also how the bed frames were defiled so that no one would ever want to sleep on that bed ever again. Someone probably doused those bedposts in Lysol until they were completely soaked through to ensure that it was spotless in time for the next guest to check in.

Reddit

23. Don’t Eat The Mystery Baked Goods

This Reddit user shared another story pertaining to one of their coworkers and the colossal mistake that they made. Even as kids, you would learn not just to pick up any food you find lying around because you don’t know what’s in it. This person didn’t get that memo and ended up getting blazed from eating too many edible pot brownies. Thankfully, she managed to get the medical attention she needed before she spiraled even further down that weed hole.

Reddit

22. When Religious Observances Result In Filth

There’s one thing about being inconsiderate, but it’s something else to be plain lazy that someone can’t throw away the tissues they used to wipe. Not all religious observances have to be understood, but the fact that these guests went out of their way to hide the tissues in the ceiling vents instead of just throwing them away means that they weren’t lazy: they just didn’t care. How would anyone want to continue working at this hotel knowing that this group of people was going to keep showing up every year?

Reddit

21. Mistake Or Sales Pitch?

If you haven’t figured out by now, a lot of intimacy goes on in hotel rooms, so it’s no surprise that sometimes, toys are also involved. And sometimes, these little devices get left behind. But an entire suitcase? It would be a big business mistake for someone who sells these things to leave many of them behind. However, this Reddit user is guessing that they did it on purpose as a strategy to entice the hotel staff to purchase a few for themselves. The world may really never know… and may not want to.

Reddit

20. A Forgotten Firearm Gets A New Owner

As you’ve seen in previous stories, people at hotels, or in this case, cabins, tend to leave things behind, and one of the more common ones seems to be firearms. Usually, this kind of thing gets reported to the police, but since they didn’t do that, they technically just… kept it Lost and Found until the allotted time had passed, and then the housekeeper who found it got to keep it. That isn’t a kind of property I don’t think I’d want to keep, not knowing its backstory.

Reddit

19. The Purity of Innocence

This poor older woman probably got a shock from learning what she’d been carrying around all day, asking everyone what it was. This lobby manager decided to inform the owner what it was, and we’re pretty sure there was an awful scream paired with the sound of metal hitting the floor. That goes double for the sound of hurried footsteps to the nearest bathroom to get her hands clean. It’s upsetting that she had to learn about this kind of thing in one of the most upsetting ways possible.

Reddit

18. Irresponsibility At Its Finest

When teenagers get to a certain age, they want to be away from their parents in order to feel more independent. But this wasn’t independence; it was pure laziness and a lack of responsibility. Obviously, they didn’t care about cleaning up their messes either, since they left it for the cleaning staff to handle. If you were on that cleaning staff, would you have informed the parents? That way, they know what kind of nonsense their teenager got up to when they were not around. Keep reading for more crazy stories about housekeepers.

Reddit

17. A Forgotten Pet With A Happy Ending

Although this person wasn’t a housekeeper, their story pretty much ends up being close to the top of the list because of just how strange this is. They found an actual, real-life hamster left behind in a hotel room. The poor thing must have been terrified at the thought of being lost in that giant room. Luckily, this person came to its rescue. What’s sad is that the previous guests didn’t even call to see if they’d found the missing pet, but it was probably for the best. The hamster gained a new home with the storyteller’s cousin and even earned a new name.

Reddit

16. Just Go To The Bathroom

In another story by the same user, they witnessed a man leaving a trail of liquid poop behind him on the floor as he tried to get to the bathroom in time. It’s understandable: accidents sometimes happen that are inevitable. But after he came out of the bathroom, instead of returning to his room to change into some clean clothes and throw the soiled ones into the wash… he just walked right into the dining room to have a meal. Imagine the smell that must have been coming off of him…

Reddit

15. Some Of The Strangest Behavior

It’s a mystery what precisely that man was doing with bug spray and cigarettes, but it couldn’t have been anything good. Much less something that made him run down the hallway like that towards his room. It was a good idea to call the cops as a matter of safety and ensure that the man wouldn’t retaliate against them either. This is definitely one of the weirdest stories out there and for this guy who’d just started working at the hotel.

Reddit

14. A Haunted Room?

Although this story does involve the death of a poor guest, that’s not the strange part of the story. The housekeepers who knew the story always felt uneasy in that room, and none of them ever wanted to clean it. But when they got a new hire who wasn’t aware of what happened in that room… they also expressed that they heard someone calling their name and staring at them from the mirror. Creepy! Either a bizarre coincidence, or this man has decided to haunt this hotel room for some reason.

Reddit

13. They’re Just Rubbers!

Guests sometimes ask hotel staff to prepare their room a certain way, especially if they’re planning something special for their getaway. This housekeeper was doing just that but found the room in a completely different state that they weren’t expecting. A friend of the couple had gotten into the room beforehand and decorated it themselves, much to the housekeeper’s surprise. The poor person was concerned that they were going to get in trouble for that friend’s antics.

Reddit

12. Not The Kind Of Flakes You Want For Breakfast

Chronic skin conditions can be challenging to treat, so although this story is a bit of a gross one, maybe the guest couldn’t really help what was happening. However, he could have asked for a vacuum to clean up after himself before he checked out of the room. Or perhaps he didn’t even know he had a skin condition at all and was oblivious to the state he was leaving the room in. Let’s hope he’s gotten it under control by now.

Reddit

11. When You Tie The Knot And Toast To Forever

This Reddit user explains how getting married can be bliss, and come with a killer hangover. It’s probably common to see couples get drunk all of the time and pass out without any clothing. However, people usually don’t have to walk in on it, unless they are housekeepers! From hotels to houses, housekeepers catch people in their birthday suits all of the time, or in this case their bridal suits. Too bad that breakfast went to waste because they probably need some good carbs to soak up all that alcohol.

Reddit

10. The Mysterious Hole

Housekeepers can put two and two together to figure out what went on in a hotel room. But finding a hole dug into a mattress isn’t something these housekeepers could explain. How do you sleep on a bed with a giant hole in it? Were they using it to hide something? It just doesn’t really make any sense. However, some of the commenters on this thread notified this Reddit user that the most common reason for digging out a hole in a mattress is to hide a dead body. Fingers crossed?

Reddit

9. Making The Bathtub Black

In what part of which country is it acceptable to polish your shoes inside of a bathtub? This isn’t the clear polish that we’re talking about. Black polish will literally stain anything and everything. It was so bad that nothing could get the stains off of the tub or the toilet or anything else that it got onto. At least they got the guy to pay for these damages, and hopefully, it taught him a lesson to either shine his shoes somewhere else or go to one of those stands that will polish your shoes for you. Keep reading for more crazy stories about housekeepers.

Reddit

8. Sometimes, You Just Don’t Want To Know

Any story involving fecal matter kind of puts an image in your head of the type of person who’d leave that behind in a hotel room. So the fact that the previous guests seemed to be pleasant ladies makes this even more confusing. It would be bad manners to ask, of course, and it is unlikely that they would even tell the truth anyway. So this housekeeper probably has to walk around with the mystery of this situation stuck in their brain forever.

Reddit

7. A Sneaky Prank That Still Left A Mess

Maybe this guy was just trying to cheer up the housekeeper so that they’d have a good laugh while they cleaned up the room… but they could have left out the ketchup. Ketchup is notorious for staining things because of how much oil is in it, so while he thought he was helping, he actually made it a lot worse. The housekeeper was likely more annoyed with him and his prank instead of having the intended laugh. And if you’re the guy that pulled that prank and you’re reading this: shame on you!

Reddit

6. That’s Not What A Safe Is For

So there was one story about someone who mistook the safe for a microwave and shoved a burrito inside. However, why would someone confuse the safe for a toilet? It’s not that big, it’s pretty heavy to move around (depending on where it is), and no one in their right mind would think, “Hey, I need to squat into this.” Perhaps the guest was trying to leave a message behind about what they really think of their hospitality. Next time, they should just stick to Yelp and keep their pants on.

Reddit

5. Breaking The Rules To Party

The roof of a hotel is pretty inaccessible to most people unless they work as maintenance at the hotel, but that didn’t stop these people from planning their own party! Because rail crews have an extensive range of equipment, these guests used their own trucks to bring them up to the roof so that they could do whatever they wanted. On the one side, at least they weren’t disturbing other guests, but on the other, they were somewhere they weren’t supposed to be, and the housecleaning staff had to extend their duties to the roof.

Reddit

4. Is Keeping Quiet The Right Choice?

This Reddit user had no problem sharing their most common “gross” stories and what they’ve had to clean out of a room. Of course, when it came to a few illegal things, they preferred to keep their mouth closed, knowing that obtaining such materials isn’t cheap and that people be allowed to have fun as long as they’re not hurting anyone else or creating a disturbance. Good guy or bad employee? We’ll leave that decision up to you! Keep reading for more crazy stories about housekeepers.

Reddit

3. Not Much Left Behind

It’s understandable that when guests are packing to leave their hotel rooms, they’ll forget something. Sometimes they manage to gather up all their things; sometimes, they leave things behind. Underwear… shouldn’t be one of those things. And what is this guy going to do with only one sock? He’s probably going to believe that his laundry machine ate when he wasn’t looking and that he’ll never find it again. At least the housekeeper got a good laugh out of their own pun.

Reddit

2. Paying Jesus What He’s Due

Maybe this guest thought that the Bible was the best place to hide his money while staying at this hotel, but he definitely forgot to take it back before he left. You’d think he would have chosen the safe in the room over the Bible, but maybe the room wasn’t equipped with one either. At least the hotel was nice enough to mail his cash back to him instead of keeping it for themselves. It really makes you wonder how much was there.

Reddit

1. Sausages And Sausages And Sausages, Oh My!

Some people just have a craving for certain foods, and this guest took that craving to the limits. It’s understandable, of course, and no one should have to ask for an explanation about one of his favorite foods. They were likely the best sausages he’d found in the town, and he wanted to have as many of them as possible to enjoy them without having to make another trip to the store. Not gross, and not even a little weird.
