They Got This Epic Cabin For Cheap

As you go through this list, you will see that most off the grid cabins are small. But this person lucked out getting a very large cabin in North Carolina. The caption of this photo says, “I lucked out and got this property on a tax foreclosure. House sat vacant for years. It had 2 inches of water in the basement, 18 bats, and 17 piles of trash. Been working the last two years. Extremely remote, 5 mile gravel driveway.” In the comment section, the original poster goes on to say that he was searching for a house for 10 years. Finally, he had the opportunity to buy the home of his dreams. He says that he had to pay the previous owners back taxes, but that it wasn’t that bad. Clearly, it was all worth it to have a stunning cabin like this in the middle of the wilderness.

An Off The Grid Cabin On 114 Acres of Land

If you want privacy, look no further than this small off the grid cabin built on 114 acres of land. On the original Reddit post, you can see an entire photo gallery of the inside and outside of this cabin. The interior walls are made of corrugated metal. And there is a wood stove keeping the cabin warm. So it’s not very modern inside, but they seem very cozy cooking eggs and bacon on top of the stove. A lot of people will buy cabins like this specifically so that they can go hunting on their land. When they own over 100 acres, they can safely shoot deer and other wildlife without disturbing the neighbors. And they have plenty of land to build a larger house on the property if they ever chose to in the future.

Off The Grid Geodesic Dome

This next one isn’t exactly a cabin, but rather a geodesic dome. In case you didn’t know, a geodesic dome is a spherical or shell structure composed of interconnected triangles. The dome is built using a technique called geodesic geometry, which was developed by the American architect Buckminster Fuller in the 1940s. Triangles are arranged in a way that evenly distributes the weight of the structure, making the dome incredibly strong and stable. Geodesic domes can vary in size and shape, and they have been used for a variety of purposes, including as housing, and greenhouses. This situation is sort of like glamping and may not be sustainable for full-time living.

A Canadian Cabin Called “The Witch’s Hat”

Our next cabin on the list is called “The Witch’s Hat”, obviously because the roof looks like a witch hat. According to the original poster, this house is only accessible by boat. So it may be built on a small island somewhere in Canada. They don’t have internet access, and there is very limited cell phone service when they are there. So aside from being off grid for their electricity needs, this is a true getaway destination that forces you to stop using your technology for a little while. It looks like it must have been a lot of fun growing up in that cabin playing on the water, kayaking, and exploring the island.

The Hyper Adobe Earth Bag Solar Shed

The homeowners built this adobe off the grid cabin in their backyard as a guest bedroom and office. In case you didn’t know, adobe houses are a traditional form of earthen architecture that have been used for thousands of years in the southwestern United States, Mexico, and South America. Adobe houses are made of mud bricks that are made from a mixture of clay, sand, and water. The bricks are usually dried in the sun, which makes them hard and durable. One of the advantages of adobe houses is that they are able to regulate temperature, keeping the interior cool during hot summers and warm during cold winters. Additionally, adobe is sustainable and environmentally-friendly. If you want to see more pictures of this cabin, check out the image gallery on the original Reddit post.

Happy In Self Isolation

At the start of the covid-19 pandemic, Most people around the world had to stay in their homes during self-isolation, unless they had a job that forced them into the outside world. This person on Reddit was actually happy to stay in self isolation, because they had their off the grid cabin. Let’s face it. Most people who build a cabin in the middle of the Woods enjoy being alone. so it isn’t surprising at all that the caption of this photo says that after 42 days in self-isolation, they are feeling just fine. If you can work from your computer, it actually seems like an ideal place to hide away from the pandemic.

It Took 7 Years to Finish This Homestead Masterpiece

Homesteading is a lifestyle that involves living off the land, being self-sufficient, and producing one’s own food and resources. The term “homesteading” originally referred to the practice of cultivating land under the Homestead Act of 1862 in the United States. Today, homesteading is often associated with sustainable living, organic farming, and simple living. Homesteaders may grow their own vegetables, fruits, and herbs, raise animals for meat, milk, and eggs, and harvest firewood for heat. They may also use alternative energy sources like solar panels or wind turbines, and recycle and repurpose materials to reduce waste. According to the caption, it took 7 years of hard work for them to build up their homestead so that it was completely self-sustainable. But as you can see from the photograph, the result is stunning. Totally worth it.

Magical Off The Grid Cabin in the Mountains of Tennessee

This is one of the larger homes on the list. As you can see from the photos, it was beautifully designed by an architect, and looks very luxurious. There is not a lot of information given on the Reddit post aside from the fact that it was built somewhere in the mountains of Tennessee. We can only assume that this person has stunning views when they look out their front window. In our opinion, this is an example of living in true luxury. Nothing like McMansions, which are crowded together and suburban neighborhoods where your view is your neighbor’s yard.

The Intentionally Unconventional Off The Grid Cabin

Our next cabin on the list comes from a blog called Intentionally Unconventional. On their website, they include both a video and over a dozen images of the process of building this cabin. They built the entire house only using trees from their own property that were cut using a chainsaw mill. Before building their cabin, these people were living out of an RV. if they even put a wood stove in the RV to help heat it in the winter time. Obviously, this off the grid cabin was way more comfortable than living in a motorhome. The homeowner spent 8 months working 6 days a week to build this cabin on his own. But he got it done in time for Christmas.

Peak Privacy

Most of the cabins on this list were posted by the owner. But in this image, someone on Reddit found their dream property that they wish they could build an off the grid lifestyle on. The property has roughly 10 acres of land, with most of them covered in trees. There are about 2 acres in the center of the plot that have been cleared where a home is built. Since there are so many trees, it gives the homeowners plenty of privacy. But, as someone pointed out in the comment section, it doesn’t stop weirdos from looking you up on Google Earth…Which is exactly what happened with this post.

Tiny House Tree Stand

Did you have a treehouse growing up? There is something truly magical about tree houses, so much so that a lot of adults never let go of wanting one. In fact, here at Home Addict, we already have an entire list of Treehouse Escapes That You Can Rent on Airbnb. The original poster on Reddit shared pictures of his tree stand house that he uses for hunting trips. There is also a little outhouse in the back for him to use the bathroom. When you see the photos of the interior of this tree house, it’s clear that this is not meant for long-term living. It’s really just a place for you to be comfortable in the middle of the woods when you go on a hunting trip.

A 600 sq ft Cozy Cabin on 120 Acres of Untouched Forest

The original poster on Reddit calls this their “little place to unwind”. It’s a tiny 600 ft cabin in the middle of 120 acres of completely untouched forest. We can all agree, we’d love something like this. (Maybe that’s stereotypical for a writer to say.) But who wouldn’t love somewhere to go that is away from all of their responsibilities, just to be alone for a little while? Unfortunately, the original poster never showed any photographs of the interior. I think that I speak for everyone when I say that we would love to see the inside of this cozy off the grid cabin.

This Shepherd’s Shed Looks Like Something Out of a Fairytale

Someone posted this photo on the off grid cabins subreddit, because it looked like something out of a dream. Since it wasn’t posted by the actual homeowner, we unfortunately don’t have any images of the interior. In the comment section, someone said that this is most likely a shepherd’s shed, rather than an actual tiny home. But we will never actually know the truth, unless we find the owner. No matter what it is, it really does look like the hero in our fairytale finds a wizard living in this cabin, where they get their next quest. Any fantasy fan would love to visit somewhere like this.

Epic A-Frame Off The Grid Cabin

As the name suggests, A-frame homes are characterized by their distinctive shape, which resembles the letter “A”. They were originally developed in the mid-20th century as vacation homes, but have since become a popular architectural style for year-round residences as well. A-frame homes are often designed to take advantage of natural light and views, with large windows and open floor plans that create a sense of spaciousness despite the compact footprint. They are also known for their energy efficiency, as their small size and compact shape can help to reduce heating and cooling costs. Here at Home Addict, we have an entire list full of amazing photographs of nothing but A-frame cabins.

Super Cozy Yurt

This next off the grid home is actually a yurt, and the inside is super cozy. A yurt is a portable, circular dwelling that has been used as a traditional form of housing by nomadic people in Central Asia for centuries. The yurt consists of a collapsible wooden frame covered in felt, canvas, or other materials, which can be easily assembled and disassembled for transportation. A circular opening at the top of the yurt allows for ventilation and the release of smoke from a wood stove or other heating source. They are particularly well-suited for cold and windy regions, as their compact shape and insulating materials can help to retain heat and provide shelter from the elements. Today, yurts have gained popularity as a unique and eco-friendly form of housing, particularly for those interested in off-grid living or sustainable tourism.

Grandpa’s 1960’s Lakeside Off The Grid Cabin

The original poster is incredibly lucky, because they inherited their grandfather’s lakeside cabin that he built in the 1960s. Not only does the cabin look magical on its own, but there is also an outdoor barbecue that is perfect for cooking on summer nights. It’s easy to imagine kayaking on the lake, fishing off the dock, and even going for a swim on a hot sunny day. This must have been so much fun for kids when they were growing up. And for adults, it’s a great place to go if you just want to unwind and be away from society for a little while.

Eastern WA Cascades Cabin

This is an incredibly beautiful and stylish cabin that was built somewhere in the Eastern Washington cascades. The original poster said that they didn’t quite finish the cabin in time for winter. But hopefully they had enough finish where they can stay inside and keep themselves warm. People in the comments were begging for interior pictures, but the original poster must have forgotten to update the people of Reddit. So we will never know what the inside of this beautiful building looks like. But at least we get to appreciate the unique architecture and style of this off the grid cabin from the outside.

Beautiful Two-Story Cabin on 26 Acres

There have been a handful of cabins on this list that are settled on a large plot of land, and this is yet another one. this time, on 26 acres. As you can see from the photo, this cabin is two stories, which makes it much better for housing an entire family. Unfortunately, we don’t get any pictures of the inside. But from the outside, we can see that they have two Adirondack chairs to relax as well as a picnic table for the family to eat outside. it truly looks like a magical place for you to go stay at any time of the year.

This Literal Log Cabin as an Off The Grid Dream

When you were a little kid, you might have grown up playing with Lincoln Logs. Years ago, pioneers in North America built lots of log cabins, but they didn’t always stand the test of time. These logs locked into one another and stacked perfectly. Well, this is exactly what it looks like in the photos of someone making a real log cabin. While this was posted on the off-grid cabins subreddit, there is actually an entire subreddit dedicated to nothing but log cabins. So if this is something you’re interested in, definitely check out that subreddit later, because it’s full of pictures that will scratch that itch.

Beautiful Cabin in Alaska

For people who hate the cold, the idea of living in Alaska might seem like a nightmare. But there is no denying that this photograph is truly cozy and magical. It looks like a scene straight out of a Hallmark Christmas movie. Almost anyone would love to go there, even just for one day. Alaska is already pretty far away from the rest of the continental United states. So adding on to the fact that this is an off-grid cabin, makes it even more remote. In the comment section, the original poster said that the only way that they can get to this cabin is by going on snowmobiles. They use electricity off of a generator, and we can only assume that they have wood fire heat.

In Progress Cabin in Northern Michigan

Cabins can take a long time to build. Here in this list, we have seen examples of people that have gotten cabins together in as little as 8 months, and others that took as long as 7 years. This cabin in particular looks like one of those prefabricated kits that you can buy from a builder. So it really shouldn’t be that difficult to assemble, and you can usually pay around $10,000 for a crew to do it for you. But in this case, it seems like the homeowner wanted to do it on their own. So, while it’s not completely finished yet, they posted a photo gallery on Reddit showing the inside and the outside of their new off the grid cabin in Northern Michigan.

Adorable Cabin Made by the Amish

The Amish are known for their expertise in carpentry and home building. Amish communities place a strong emphasis on self-sufficiency and self-reliance, and this extends to their approach to home building. They typically rely on traditional techniques and hand tools rather than modern machinery, and their construction methods prioritize durability, sustainability, and function over aesthetics or cost. In addition to their technical expertise, the Amish also value a strong work ethic. They take pride in their work, and often strive to exceed expectations. So this Redditor was truly lucky to get their entire cabin built by the Amish. It’s probably so well made, it’s going to be years before they need to do any repairs.

Snowed In, and Deep Off The Grid

The caption of this photo said,”Things are getting deep off grid in Alaska”. For someone who loves summertime, this looks like an absolute nightmare. The small cabin is almost completely buried in several feet of snow. This homeowner managed to get out of the house and build a fire outdoors. If you’re choosing to live in Alaska, then you probably love the cold. So I’m sure there are some people out there that would look at this photograph and absolutely swoon over the idea of being snowed in. I’m just not one of those people. I’d rather take a hot day on a beach, thank you.

Gorgeous Cabin in the Woods of the Pacific Northwest

This photo of a cabin in the Pacific Northwest really looks like something out of a magazine. In the comment section, the original poster explained that they mostly get their power off of solar panels, and they have a backup generator for rainy days. The Pacific Northwest is also known for its cloudy and overcast weather, particularly during the fall and winter months. This can result in a higher number of “rainy days” even if the total amount of rainfall is relatively low. Combined with all of the trees surrounding the house, they probably don’t get a lot of power from their solar panel. But they seem to be very happy with their living situation anyway.

Cabin in the West Cascade Foothills

The West Cascade Foothills are a region located in western Oregon. This area is situated at the eastern edge of the Cascade Range, and is characterized by rolling hills, forests, and rivers. The region is known for its natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities, including hiking, fishing, and camping. So even though this tiny cabin looks sort of primitive, it’s located in a really beautiful spot. Whoever lives here probably loves hiking and living off the land in their off the grid lifestyle. All you really need are the bare necessities, and you can be happy.

Self-Sufficient Treehouse Compound

Here is yet another beautiful treehouse. But this time, it is an entire compound of interconnected platform structures that are connected by a hanging bridge. This truly looks like something that all of us would have adored in our childhoods. But, based on the photographs, It’s clear that this is being used by an adult. And in one of the photos, you can see that they have a piano in one of the small treehouse buildings. Maybe this person is a musician, and they use this place as a getaway to compose. Imagine walking through the forest and you hear the beautiful sounds of piano music playing. Then you realize that it’s coming from a magical treehouse. It’s an absolute fantasy.

They Paid $250 to Move a Prefab Cabin to the Middle of Nowhere

Prefabricated homes are typically a lot cheaper than most other options. And it comes with the added benefit of being able to literally move an entire house to a new location. In the caption, the original poster said, “Moving day was a success! The operator knew what he was doing, had it loaded, delivered and leveled in 2 hours. And that included 60 kms of driving. Only cost me $250 so I tipped him $50 as I was super impressed with this young man’s work ethic and organization.” Wow. So, essentially for the same price that it would cost to rent a moving van to move into a new apartment, this person had an entire house moved on to their property.

Cozy Winter Morning Pancakes on a Camping Stove

Most of the photos on this list have images of the outside of a cabin. But it’s nice to see some views of what it would be like inside. The caption of the photo said that they are making pancakes on a 30 degree day. As you can see from the photo, they’re cooking the pancakes on a camping stove that is most likely powered by tanks of gas. Even though it’s cold outside, it looks really cozy inside of the cabin. And they have a beautiful view to look at while they cook their pancakes. I’m assuming there is no running water, since they have a jug with a spigot off to the right. But it still looks like it would be a lot of fun to go camping in.

Celebrating a White Christmas

Wow. This photograph truly looks like something out of a magazine. Imagine being snowed in around Christmas time in this magical cabin, with a cup of coffee or cocoa to warm you by the wood stove. It turns out that this cabin belongs to someone with a YouTube channel called A Cabin and 50 Acres. Their channel shows their viewers exactly how they built this cabin by hand. The caption of the photo says, “Just about finished with this corner of our cabin. Everything except the windows, light and sink is hand made. The wood is a mixture of pine, maple, walnut and ash. To top it off we got a white Christmas!”

Off The Grid Cabin on a Tiny Private Island

Nothing says privacy more than having a literal private island to yourself. Someone in Maine decided to build this log cabin on a private island, and live completely off the grid. There are only three photos on Reddit, so we don’t get a good idea of what the interior looks like. This looks very rustic, and reminds us of camping in the summertime. However, we’re sure that this homeowner is probably able to stay in the winter if they really wanted to. In the comment section, they said that the island is roughly 1/2 of an acre. They regularly bring their friends and family to the island where they pitch their own tents and have a private camping spot. The only way to access the island is by boat, or by ski-doo.

Reading By a Kerosine Light

Here is yet another photo that shows you more of what life would be like if you actually lived in one of these off the grid cabins. If you don’t have access to electric lights, or if you want to save power when the sun goes down, it makes sense to read by kerosene light. This is something that people did for hundreds of years before electricity. Believe it or not, kerosine lamps are still being manufactured today, and you can buy a brand new one for $20. (No need to search an antique shop for a vintage one.) They say that reading in the dark can put a strain on your eyesight. But it still looks incredibly cozy and fun to be reading by a candlelight.

In The Winter, This Cabin is Only Accessible by Snowmobile

On the original Reddit post, the homeowner said, “Just got an off-grid spot that’s snowmachine access only in the winter. It’s at the end of the trail surrounded by miles of pure Alaskan wilderness.” This is truly off the grid. It’s probably miles away from all civilization. And without an actual road leading up to the house, you have to ride a snowmobile through the forest in order to get your groceries. We can only imagine that this would be a tough life to live. But for some people, this lifestyle is the definition of paradise. Let’s just hope they don’t end up with a medical emergency during a blizzard.

All Snowed In

This incredible photo looks like something out of a Christmas card. And it’s fitting, because the caption only says, “Merry Christmas”. as you can see, there is a little kid wearing their snow suit in the corner of the picture. So we can tell that there is a family living in this cozy cabin. It must be magical to grow up with a childhood like this. We can imagine this being a mountain vacation home for a family who only goes there on special occasions. Someone in the comments said, “I hope you have a shovel.” Yep. That looks like a huge pain to dig yourself out of.

Adorable Yurt Outside of Asheville, North Carolina

This is a 30 ft wide yurt located just outside of Asheville, North carolina. The original poster said that they have been living in this cabin for 8 months straight off the grid. In the comments section they say that they got a permit to do pretty much everything except add a septic system to the forest. So they have to use a composting toilet. Since they moved in roughly about a year ago, it’s clear that the pandemic must have been part of their motivation to get away from society. In the comment section, they said that the roof should last for at least 8 to 10 years, and that it only cost around $1,000 to replace. So it’s very cheap, and easy to maintain.

This Cabin Has an Epic Back Porch

Out of everything on this list, this stunning back porch is one of our favorite things. Imagine using that pizza oven on a warm evening with your friends and family. And you eat with the best view in the world right in front of you. We never get to see the house that is attached to the porch in this photograph. The design must be equally as luxurious as the portrait self. In the comment section, he mentioned that it’s just a 5-minute walk away from the river. It turns out that this guy has a YouTube channel called Woodland Retreat. So click here if you want to see a video of the property and images of the interior of the house.

Off Grid Escape in the Himalayas

So far in this last, we have had mostly cabins from North america. But this one is a little bit different, because it is located in the Himalayas. The caption of this photo says, “My off-grid escape in the Himalayas. For ME time.” In case you didn’t know, The Himalayas are a mountain range located in Asia. They span across several countries including India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. It is home to some of the tallest peaks in the world, including Mount Everest. In the comment section, the original poster and some others discuss how this would be the perfect place to survive the apocalypse. Apparently there is a lot they can forage to survive off the land, and it’s not too far from a nearby village.

Credit: Reddit

Cooking On a Wood Fire Stove

Here is yet another picture showing what life would be like living inside of an off the grid cabin. They are cooking burgers and fries on top of the wood stove. In case you’ve never used a wood stove before, they get so hot that it will literally boil water if you put a kettle on top of it. So it’s actually very useful, because it is heating the home and also gives you a place to cook at the same time. The only downside is that you can’t touch it, or you will burn yourself. This makes it really dangerous to have around young kids who don’t know any better. So it’s probably wise to just have some adult time in this cabin.

Proof That It Snows In California

A lot of people who live outside of California will assume that it never snows there. That’s probably because we always think of Hollywood and Southern California that we see in movies and TV shows. But the truth is that Northern California actually does get snow, Especially in the mountainous areas. The original poster never said exactly where this is, but someone in the comments guessed that it was near Lake Tahoe. Imagine trying to shovel yourself out of a scenario like this. We would just try to stay inside until the snow melted in the spring.

Off Grid Cabin Office

Last but not least is this really cool cozy off-the-grid cabin office space. In the comments, the original poster said that he was getting a lot of heat when he tried to post this on some of the other off the grid communities. If you have a computer with multiple monitors, people assume that you’re not actually roughing it. But people still have to work! I’m assuming that this is powered by solar panels, because they clearly have electricity running the computer. Just because you live off the grid doesn’t mean you have to be unemployed and live at one with nature all the time.
