For hundreds of years, people have told haunted house stories that have been popular around the world. Some people believe that the unhappy spirits of the house’s former inhabitants are still left behind. Here is a collection of true stories told by people on Reddit who believed they were living in a haunted house. For the sake of length, we’ve abbreviated many of the original stories, but the core message has stayed the same. Some of these just might make a believer out of you. If you love these stories, check out our shocking stories about hoarders.

30. The Real Estate Agent Warned Him That He was Buying a Haunted House, and He Didn’t Believe Them

Our first story comes from a Reddit user named TigLyon. “I am typically a skeptic and can usually apply logic to figure out a plausible explanation. When I bought my house, they had to disclose reports of paranormal activity. I thought, ‘Yeah, whatever’. But the number of times I have had to come up with rational explanations borders on obsessive. The typical footsteps upstairs, children laughing. Knocking on walls or doors. Hey, it’s an old house, creaks, groans, hot water pipes pinging, etc…it all happens. Light bulbs smashed on the floor having removed themselves from the metal base. One plant in particular would get overturned often. Once it ended up halfway across the room.”

The stereo turns on at random times of the day, almost always to classical music. Various lost objects showed up in highly noticeable places. Like how can you lose your watch in the middle of the completely cleared kitchen table? But the ones that get me the most are the ones where I am completely stumped. On the same day, every year, is the smell of something burning. After about two hours it goes away. Until the next year. The other one is the presence of “hot-spots” in the house. Not by temperature. But when you stand in a certain place, you feel something. This has been witnessed by people aware as well as unaware of the phenomenon itself. When you stand in one, you feel compelled to face a certain way. I watched a police officer turned in mid-sentence to stare at the wall. He was visibly shaken.

29. The Maid With Unfinished Business

In this story by a Reddit user called TwigSnapper. “My uncle’s house is in the very eastern part of New York. In the 1800’s, the former owners went back on their promise to give the house to the stableman and the maid, and sold it instead. He and the maid were said to have felt so attached to the house, that they haunted the place after they passed away. We always used to joke that you would hear people or things moving at night. But since the house is so old, we used to just laugh it off. We all started to believe it after my uncle’s friend stayed over at the house one night.”

“In the early morning, the friend woke up to use the bathroom, and noticed a maid bringing towels and a coffee percolator down the stairs. She assumed that my uncle was hiring staff. He is a Neurologist in NYC, so he had a habit of spending a little bit extra. So she went back to bed. Later that morning, she went downstairs and asked my uncle where the maid went, and thought that she was cooking breakfast. My uncle had no idea what she was talking about and asked what she looked like. The sister explained, and he laughed. He walked her to the living room, pointed to an old picture, and asked if this was the woman she had seen. She said yes, that was the same woman. My uncle replied, “Yea, she has been dead for about 100 years”.

28. The Not-So-Scary Tale of the Ghost Nanny

Not every ghost story needs to be scary. A Reddit user who goes by CarChaseCity tells the story of how she was taken care of by a ghost nanny when she was a baby. “My mom’s convinced that the house I lived in until I was in kindergarten was haunted. Apparently the previous owner was a nice old lady and she died in the house before we bought it. She has a lot of stories about hearing doors creek, voices, and footsteps in the hallway before my sister and I were old enough to walk. Pretty standard ghost stuff.”

“But the weirdest part she talked about is that sometimes in the middle of the night when no one was in my room, my mobile would go off and my crib would be rocking when my mom walked in and I’d be dead asleep. She thinks that when I was upset in the night the ghost of the old lady would help calm me down in the night.”

27. The Gangster in the Hat

The story by a user named Indian Orphan is downright creepy. “I lived in a haunted house for 10 years. Every one of my kids saw the man in the hat between the ages of 2 to 5. Once I heard my 5 year old son screaming for me in the middle of the night. I went to him and he begged me to make his drawers stop. He said the man kept opening and slamming them shut, and he couldn’t sleep. The most violent episode was when I let my 15 year old brother watch my kids. We got home around 2 am and found my brother sitting in the hallway shaking and crying. He said that when he got the kids in bed, pounding started all over the house. It was so bad he went outside to see if there were people hitting the house.

“When he walked back inside, he saw the reflection of the man in the hat in the mirror walking up the steps towards the kid’s rooms. He went running to save them, but no one was there. Then, a shadowy figure streaked around the corner, and the front door opened and shut on its own. This wasn’t the only time. We had neighbors call us at all hours of the night asking if we were ok. They saw shadowy gangs of people in our yard sneaking around our windows. The cops got so used to getting the same 911 call, they stationed a cop to watch our house between 2 and 3 am. When we moved, the new people only stayed there for a month, because they said it was too scary. The house has been vacant now for 8 years.”

26. Darkness Down the Hall

A user called Spider Party tells the story of a strange darkness. “The house I grew up in had a slightly strange design in that all the bedrooms were clumped together at one end of the house. The kitchen and living room were at the other end. The two areas were connected by a long, narrow hallway with closets on either side. If you were sitting in our living room you could look straight down the hallway to my bedroom door. The one thing that we could never rationalize was the darkness at the end of the hall. The living room lights always have enough light to see down the hall. But sometimes, we’d be sitting in the living room and get the feeling that we were being watched. “

“When that feeling would come over us, the end of the hallway would be completely blacked out. It was like someone dropped a curtain over the end of the hall. When this would happen, our three little dogs would go to the mouth of the hallway and sit at the black line, staring down into the darkness. Sometimes they’d bark or growl, but mostly they just stared. Once in a while one of them would get brave enough to walk down the hall, but they never got more than halfway to the darkness before they’d stop and back up. They would walk backwards up the hall, never turning their back on whatever they were looking at. After a little while the oppressive feeling would lift, the darkness would disappear, and the dogs would wander off.”

25. The Witching Hour

A man named FynnCobb accidently bought a haunted house from his great aunt. “My wife and I were living in an apartment, and my great aunt was looking to sell her 1950’s home. She suggested she take the apartment and we buy the house. It was 2005, and the market was going NUTS, so it worked out for everyone. We got a fixer-upper for a fair price and she got an apartment without the hassle. Strange things started to happen. After moving in, I started sleep-walking. I actually opened up the basement door and fell down a flight of stairs. My great aunt passed away, and then things started getting really strange. My son started waking up at 3AM crying. The cat would go into my son’s room and stare at the top corner of his wall. The dogs would growl at it, too.”

“My wife was getting nervous, but I just laughed it off. We were watching my nephew one day. I hear giggling in my son’s room. I walk in, and he is pointing at the top corner. Just creepy giggling. My son started saying things like, ‘I don’t want to go to bed. He gets mad’ Then the 3AM stuff. I’d wake up in a cold sweat. Falling back to sleep was tough because I felt like someone was watching. Then, for absolutely no reason, at 3:01AM my smoke detector started going off. ‘FIRE. FIRE. FIRE.’ After trying to change the batteries, this went on for 4 nights in a row, and then stopped. We ended up moving shortly after. I have never felt safer. No creepy feelings, the kids are sleeping better, I’ve even stopped sleepwalking.”

24. Mr. Longneck Part 1: “That Guy”

A mother who goes by the name of Amberenn tells a terrifying story. ” I’m a skeptic with any paranormal experience. But enough things have happened in the last year to make me at least entertain the possibility that this is not just my daughter’s imagination. These events have occurred only in the house, which was built in the 1920’s. I was laying my daughter down for bed. It was dark, with only moonlight lighting the bedroom. She pointed across the room and asked, “Mom, who’s that guy?” I looked for a toy she could be referring to but saw nothing, so I asked, “What guy, honey?” She responded that he was “right there” and gestured toward the closed bedroom door. Still curious, I asked her what he was doing. She said he was hiding.”

“From there we just had a funny story to tell our friends about “That Guy”. When weird stuff happened around the house, we joked that “That Guy” is pulling a prank. A year later, I was again laying her down for bed. We were doing the usual cuddle up talk, when she said, “Now it’s time for bed. Just me and you and him and her.” My skeptic mind would argue that “him” could easily have been her baby brother, but at the time she was still adjusting to having a new sibling and rarely mentioned him. What really was strange was “her”. Who’s “her”? The only other female in the house is our cat and she wasn’t in the room. Also, no toys were in bed with us. A little later that spring, a new name came into a new conversation with my daughter. She called him Mr. Longneck.”

23. Mr. Longneck Part 2: The Time Capsule

The Amberenn story was so long, so we needed to include it in two parts. “My daughter has this weird thing where she likes touching necks. Usually, it’s playful. Kids do weird stuff sometimes. Anyway, she was getting put down for a nap. She suddenly grabbed my neck a little tougher than usual, and said in a growly voice, “Mr. Longneck. Mr. Longneck!” I had never heard her use this name and it isn’t a character in any show she watches. I asked who Mr. Longneck was. She just giggled and fell asleep. This was when I started getting creeped out. A couple months later, my husband found a time capsule in one of our heating vents. There had been a fire in our home, but the capsule survived. Among the old stuff was a small notebook with some handwritten names inside. “

“One day, I asked my daughter if she could tell me more about ‘The Guy’. She said, ‘What guy?’ I asked, ‘Mr. Longneck?’ Her face lit up, and she explained that he is a grown man who wears monster clothes, and a hat. He comes into the house at nap time. I asked what he says or does, and she mentioned he played in the kitchen with her with the ‘spinny cow toy’. She NEVER plays with it, apparently because she saves it for Mr. Longneck. I also asked if he ever brought a friend. He brings a friend, she is a little girl, and ‘has yellow hair like me’. She is never scared of these talks, until I ask why his neck is long. Then, she withdraws, and refuses to stop talking about it.

22. The Ghost on the Plantation

A Reddit user by the name of Siray encountered a ghost on a slave plantation. “We lived in an old slave plantation on St Croix when I was a kid. Very few locals ever visited the place. So when we moved in my 4-year old sister asked my dad who the man with the big knife was. My dad decided to check things out and found nothing. Then we’d frequently smell fresh Jasmine blooming. So whatever we move in and the locals are like “Whaaaat? You moved into that place?” and my dad would be like “Yeah, why?” So they started to tell him about the slave who would serve the masters tea every day and about the ghost with a machete. We didn’t move. Spent three years there. The ghost with the machete never bothered us again.”

21. A Stepfather Returns

A Reddit user named Tiff told this story. “In 2012, my stepfather overdosed on heroin in the hallway in his condo apartment. He dropped dead on July 13th in 2012. On a Friday the 13th. My mum had to move out shortly after since they were already behind on mortgage bills. A few months later, my lease went up and I was barely making ends meet and couldn’t find a new roommate. My mum offered me the key to the condo apartment to “squat” for a few months until I saved up enough for my own apartment.”

“I took the offer and moved into the condo apartment. After a month or so, I was asleep in the living room and I had this dream of my stepfather standing in the hallway facing the living room. He was looking at me and smiling and laughing. Even made a stupid joke and everything. It wasn’t disturbing at all, just bittersweet. Then I suddenly woke when I felt some pressure stroking down my head and back. There was nothing around me and it tripped me out. As a skeptical person that doesn’t believe in the paranormal, it has to be some kind of sensory hallucination. It was still nice to see him in my dream once again though. RIP Darin.”

20. Animals Sense When Ghosts are Near

A user by the name of pooveryfarms tells their ghostly haunted house story. “I lived in a house with 4 girls and 4 animals in college. One night I happened to have the house to myself, which was fabulous because I had a paper to write. So I’m in my bed with my laptop and I hear a scratch at the door. It’s the dog Mikko and he’s shaking and whining. As soon as I open the door, the two cats Ralph and Beaner streak in behind him and jump on my bed. I squeeze in between all of them and I resume my studying.”

“Suddenly, Ralph’s hair stands on end and Mikko starts to whine. Beaner’s claws are digging into my legs as soon as I hear footsteps upstairs in the hallway. It’s a pretty short hallway, probably about 20 feet, but the footsteps keep walking, and walking, and walking past the outer wall of the house into the next door neighbors house. Mikko starts growling when the footsteps turn around and I hear them SPRINTING back in our direction and then a door SLAMS shut. By this point my heart is racing and Mikko is barking up a storm so I grab a baseball bat and walk upstairs. Nobody was home but me and the animals.”

19. History Nearly Repeated Itself

TheToeNailCollection on Reddit tells their story; “I lived in a haunted house when I was a teenager, along with my parents. We were remodeling an old farmhouse and had been there a couple of months before witnessing anything. One day I was underneath my truck, which was supported by only a jack. (stupid, I know) I was in the middle of working on it. Suddenly I had the overwhelming urge to get out from underneath the truck. No sooner than I got out, the truck fell to the ground, because the jack had slipped. Dad freaked out, because he thought I was under it. When mom got home, we mentioned it, and she started crying, sobbing pretty hard. It turns out the previous owner died in the driveway underneath his vehicle in the same way, in that exact same spot.”

“I would often see moving shadows, and hear music from the upstairs area. The windows of the old house were caulked shut, and blackbirds would often get caught between the panes. We ended up replacing all the windows but we had to break three inside panes to get them out. One of the more disturbing things happened when my mother was cooking breakfast. She turned away to get something out of the cabinet. When she turned back around, all the forks set out were bent straight up.”

18. Ghost, or Invisible Alien?

A user by the name DoctorPhilly grew up in a European villa with a long history of tragedy. “I grew up in a huge 17th century house. Today it has been completely remodeled on the inside. But while we lived there; it was still in the beautiful old style with art, ballroom, marble floor halls, and statues. Throughout history, the house was once a brothel, a plague hospital, and a morgue. During WW2, it was an SS post before it got shot and killed about 20 Germans. There were 3 families who tried to live there, and multiple murders of family members occurred inside the house. As a kid I saw a lot of shadows, heard a lot of weird noises. Doors would open and close on their own. My sister came down to my room at night to stare at me while sleepwalking.”

“One time, my parents were in China for business. My siblings and I slept at friend’s houses. I had to go to hockey practice, but I forgot some gear. So my friend and I went to my house to get it. As we walked out of my room, we heard footsteps in the attic. My siblings had their bedrooms there, so I assumed they were home. I shouted at them, which made the footsteps stop. Five seconds later, We heard footsteps coming downstairs, and down the hallway to where we stood. I felt the weight of a body on the old floorboards standing in front of me, but I saw nothing. Outside, my friend began to have a nervous breakdown because he said he saw a form that looked like an alien standing in front of me. He refused to ever set foot into my house again.”

17. A Curse, a Ghost, and a Doppelganger

A user named rajjiv casually recounts his ghost experiences. “I don’t believe in ghosts at all, but my family does, vehemently. Growing up in an Asian country, superstitions were practically fact and it wasn’t easy for a person to dismiss them. So when my cousin said he saw a strange man standing outside the gate, muttering odd things and leaving, the family was a little taken back. Who was this guy? Immediately everyone thought that the house had been ‘marked’ or cursed. Several strange occurrences were reported. One of the girls said that when she entered her bedroom, she saw a white woman dressed Victorian style sitting on her bed, crying. We live in Malaysia, which was formerly an English colony.”

“Doppelgangers of family members were seen. At night, more than a few people reported seeing a strange furry figure peering furtively into the bedroom. It all reached a breaking point when my cousin suddenly broke out into a fit in the middle of the day. He had no history of epilepsy whatsoever. He was writhing on the floor, babbling incoherently about a bearded man standing in the corner of the room, glaring at him. The family then decided they had had enough of this and went to a local priest to cleanse the house. Things seemed to settle after. I personally never bought into it but as a child I really couldn’t say much. Who knows what really happened anyway?”

16. The Ghostly Girl Just Wanted to Protect Her Home

Someone called Nai75 tells the story of how their family’s move to the UK wasn’t exactly ideal. “My family moved from the US to the UK and our parents bought an old beat up house. It still had lead pipes for the water. Nightmare all on its own. Anyway, work proceeded on the house whilst we lived there. We started seeing bright lights in the corners of rooms at night. Footsteps on floor boards, even though the house had carpet. I was about 6 at the time and started getting woken up in the night by a little girl, who would dance on my chest of drawers for me. I was terrified. My mum just fobbed it off as me dreaming. Workmen complained of strange things happening like tools being moved and an odd feeling like being watched.”

“After about a year of this my eldest sister’s friend stayed overnight. She woke the whole house up screaming, saying a little girl had been in her room, she had apparently pulled her from the bed. The friend left the house and refused to ever come back. Mum decided she might need to do something about it and got some advice. Someone suggested my mum and the whole family should treat the ghost as part of the family. So when we got home we started saying, “Hi we’re home, did you have a good day?” Over time the house settled and we didn’t get anymore trouble. We also found out a little girl did die in the house of asthma. My parents still live there and it is a beautiful homely place now.”

15. Ghosts Make Bad Roommates

A user by the name of WeeklyPie lived in a haunted house. But rather than be scared, they were exacerbated by their ghostly roommate. “I lived in a house for about 5 years that was haunted, but not in a malicious way. In a ‘shitty roommate’ kind of way. I’d come home to the windows on the second floor being open when it was raining. To food containers being open in the fridge that I hadn’t touched yet.”

“The worst was that the ‘ghost’ hated clocks. She hated them. I had antique cuckoo clocks that had worked for 50 years that would just stop. Brand new wall clocks that ate through batteries like it was candy. My watch ended up on the floor one morning, the crystal shattered, even though I knew I slept with it on. The one that pissed me off the most was that I got a brand new kit-kat clock for Christmas – and the b- threw it off the wall. I was cooking and out of the corner of my eye saw the cat freaking FLY. Turned around and it was across the kitchen. Broken. It was brand new!”

14. The Ghost Was Trying Trying to Make Tea

An English user called Si Gnarlfire moved to America, and ended up with a ghost encounter in his house. “I’m living in a house in New Jersey. A week ago at 3am I was getting up to turn the heat off. I was yawning and rubbing my eyes. Just as I was about to get up to go to bed I hear this noise getting louder. I suddenly realized the kettle was boiling by itself. You have to push a button down, that has definitely been pressed. I freak out thinking it was me, somehow. The words; ‘But I don’t want tea’ come out of my mouth. At that point, the kettle clicks off. I literally heard the switch. As soon as I said that I felt guilty like I shouldn’t have been scared of the ghost. Like it was a friendly offer.

Two days later I was with a friend at the dining room table, both of us at least 5 foot away from the kettle. It starts boiling again. My friend rushes over and points out the button has been pushed. So much relief came over me that I wasn’t insane. Then, a few nights ago, I was lying in bed and could hear a conversation at 4am. No one is around, and my neighbors are 20 feet away either side. Then the kettle starts boiling. I’m pissed, so I say, “Please stop boiling the kettle, we have people asleep upstairs”. It clicked off again. I don’t believe in ghosts, and have never felt anything like this before. It’s just freaky, not scary. I feel as though someone is trying to take care of me, like when you were sick off school and your mum would bring you tea.”

13. This Ghost Tried to Lure The Victims Into the Basement

Someone who goes by Munchyz tells this tale. “I lived in a haunted house in college. Things got so weird that everyone moved out except for me. One time, I woke up at 3am, alone, hearing the Nintendo on the back porch playing loudly. I figured a drunk kid broke in and started playing. I grabbed a bat and walked towards the back of the house as the music got louder and louder. As soon as I opened the door, it was completely quiet. Another time, I woke up at 3am because my roommate’s door kept opening and slamming shut. I yelled at him to stop, only to realize I was the only one home. As soon as I yelled, the slamming stopped, but the beads I had hanging on my door began to sway violently, instead.”

“I had friends over and told them the house was haunted. No one believed me so I asked the ghost to do anything to prove it was there. As soon as I asked, all the lights in the house began flickering for about a minute straight. This house had a secret door built into the flooring that used to be a coal shoot, which led to the basement. We always had a rug covering it up so no one knew it was there. And yet things would constantly go missing in the house, and turn up in the basement coal shoot, like something was trying to force us down there. Voices would wake us up in the middle of the night. I spent many mornings on the front porch waiting for the sun to come up before I went back in the house.”

12. A SchoolHouse Grudge

Earlier on this list, we mentioned a story by a user named rajjiv from Malaysia. They had another story about how their school was apparently haunted, too. “The school is pretty old, built during the British occupation. It actually contained secret exits and rooms. Certain parts of the school were permanently closed, which of course led to rumors among the students. One day, we all witnessed a crying janitor being escorted out of a restricted area by teachers who were trying to calm her down. In the same week as the janitor’s breakdown, we saw teachers yelling at kids to get away from a toilet near the restricted area, and go back to their classrooms. One of the boys claimed that he used that bathroom, and when he came out of the cubicle, he saw several wet, long hairs plastered on the wall.”

“The grand finale? Someone got possessed. One of the boys went into a frenzy and had to be held down. He was speaking in a very strange dialect that was quite alien in the area. The strangest of all, it was a woman’s voice. His parents and an ambulance had to be called. Some time later, we were all told that we could leave for the day. After we left, the school got a priest or medicine man to cleanse the school. I honestly have no time for these superstitions but I’m surrounded with them, so it can get interesting. Also, a day off school. Thanks, ghosts.”

11. The Flying Ghost of Grandpa

The username has been deleted from this Reddit user. But they tell the stories of how they apparently saw the ghost of their dead grandfather often. When I was one, my mom’s father died. We were in the car and I frantically tried getting my mom to look out the window of the car saying “papa flies, look papa flies”. When we got home she had a message on the answering machine saying he had passed away.

She was only 19 and there was no anticipation of his death. She has a dozen stories of me crying, she would come in to check on me and by the time she got there, I would be laughing and tell her “papa tickling me”. We also had this music box that played “you got a friend in me” from Toy Story. It barely worked and you had to open it for it to play. In the middle of the night, my parents would hear it on the monitor, panic, come to check on me and I would be sleeping. The song would be playing out of a closed music box.

10. The Face in the Window

A User named Ty_Guy-42 tells his tale: I did not believe in ghosts until I lived in a haunted house. It started out as little things. The bathroom door would open violently on its own. My roommate and I both noticed a red light in the spare bedroom. I’d always go to the spare room to investigate, but could never find the source of the light. Then weirder things started to happen. One night, I was sitting in the living room with my friends, when all three of us noticed the shape of a woman’s face appear in the window pane. Even then, I tried to explain it away as a trick of the light. Twice, while heading up the stairs to my room for bed, I heard a woman’s voice say “goodnight” to me, over my shoulder.

What finally convinced me was one time when I was brushing my teeth, something tugged insistently on my sleeve, and I’m 100% sure that I didn’t catch it on anything. It was like a fish was nibbling on the line, except on my t-shirt sleeve. We’d hear footsteps upstairs while home alone. I often saw shadows out of the corner of my eye – one time, I even saw a shadow while looking right at it in the middle of the room – not up against a wall – for 5 minutes or so. The strangest thing that happened was New Years Eve, 3 years ago. My roommate and I were hosting a party, and waiting for people to show up. Suddenly, I felt something brush against my arm, and the lightbulb in the lamp I was sitting beside exploded.

9. A Mysterious Doppleganger in a Nightgown

Here is yet another story from the ghost reddit. “My grandfather had a story. He was in bed, reading before going to sleep, and he saw my grandmother (his wife) walk past the bedroom in a nightgown. He thought that was odd because she never wears a nightgown. A couple minutes later, she walked in the room from the same side of the hallway that she walked from earlier, and got in bed. He asked why she changed into those clothes out of her nightgown right before bed. She said “Hon, I don’t wear nightgowns.”

“The other story he told me was a computer they had that was in the middle of a large circular table in the basement. They heard a big crash from the basement and naturally ran down to check it out. His computer was on the floor, broken. To this day he insists it could not have fallen on its own, as it was in the middle of the table.”

8. The Man in the Trench Coat

A user named Abgleich tells the story of his wife’s parents, and how a ghost visited her as a baby. My in-laws tell a story about how when my wife was a baby she was terribly fussy, especially at night. One night after she was down to sleep my mother-in-law was walking into the kitchen and took a look down the hallway and she could see what appeared to be a man in a trench-coat leaning over her crib calming her down. My mother-in-law thought “oh, that’s nice..he’s looking after her too.” and went on with her business.

A few minutes later it sank what she saw and freaked out. My father in law got up thinking she was crazy and saw the man there as well. I think what freaks them both out the most is how NOT weird it felt or seemed. To this day they’ll swear it was real, and have come to describe the man as an angel of sorts. They saw, and knew that he wasn’t there to hurt my wife. I guess she calmed way down at night after that, the screaming nights ended there.

7. The 7-Foot Shadow

A Redditor named DenHolme2 tells a scary story: “When I was around 9-10 years old, I was living with my dad. He has a very large terrace house built in the 1800s, every so often there would be an unexplainable event happen, such as footsteps when there’s no one there or voices. On the night this happened, it was just my dad and I in the house, my sister was staying with my mum at the time.”

“I woke up and noticed the door to my room was wide open. Normally, I sleep with it closed. I then became aware of a large 7ft tall shadow-like figure watching me from the end of the bed. When the figure noticed me it seemed to melt into the floor and the door to my room slammed shut. Understandably, I was slightly traumatized by the whole experience. I asked my dad the next day if he was in my room and he denied any knowledge of the event. He’s not the type of person that likes jokes. I still have no idea what happened that night.”

6. Two Ghosts, Two Haunting Styles

One reddit user named xCyanotik explains a secondhand ghost story. “So, my ex girlfriend’s mom said she used to live in a haunted house. Ironically enough, it was the house next door to the one they were living at. Story goes that when she was a kid living there they had 2 separate ghosts, one upstairs, the other downstairs. The downstairs one was more subtle. It would move around little things, cast shadows along the windows and walls, subtle creepy things that would bother someone. The one upstairs on the other hand was apparently trying its damndest to make itself known. Slamming doors, stomping across the floor, walking up and downstairs.”

“The story that made me weary about the house (I’m a firm believer in the paranormal) was that when my ex’s mom was painting the upstairs hallway wall. The wall was originally red, painted over white. Well, they wanted it to be a light blue. So she started to paint it and she said that while she was painting a certain spot, it started to bleed red through the blue and no matter how many times she painted it, the blue would not stay as the red would bleed through it. I’m not sure the truth in all of this, but walking past that house always had me looking at windows hoping to see a face or shadow in the window.”

5. The Ghostly Doppelganger

A Redditor called TheCaptainHat shares his potential doppelganger experience. “When I was younger, my parents would frequently go run errands in the neighboring city and be gone most of the day from morning to night. Our living room was in a spot where you would have to walk through it to get from the back door to reach either the front door or my parents’ room. You would walk between the couch and the TV while doing so. So I was home alone and my dad came through the back door, walked in front of me as he crossed the room and entered his and my moms room. Then he came back out, walked across my field of vision once again, and left through the back door.”

“He didn’t look at me, look at the TV, or really do anything besides walk across the room in both directions. When I asked him what he came home for or if he forgot something he honestly had no clue what I was talking about. They were an hour and a half away and coming home for something they forgot would have not made much sense. He was also wearing different clothes when I spoke with him compared to when I “saw” him earlier. Such a strange experience and I only saw it that one time.”

4. The Haunted Painting

A user by the name of Doctor Death did an entire AMA or “Ask Me Anything” where he claimed to have lived in a haunted house. He was open to answering any questions. “Before I lived in that house I didn’t believe in the paranormal. But after only a few days of moving into that house, we started having doors slam shut, even though there was carpet and you HAD to physically move the doors. The cabinets in the kitchen would open and close. Things that you sat on the counter would sometimes slide off very violently. My one friend’s room was like a freezer sometimes. You could actually see your breath, but it would only last for a minute or two before warming up again. He slept on the couch a lot.”

“The owner of the house- my roommate’s father- was a very wealthy doctor who collected old art. Right in the front of the house was a huge painting of some travelers being robbed and killed by highwaymen. Multiple people saw the man depicted as being killed in that painting walking through the house like he was lost. That painting was evil as hell, it gave me the creeps like nothing I have ever seen before or since. Many times we heard voices of what sounded like people whispering to each other. I actually felt someone touch me from behind many times and there would be no one there. It really made you question your own sanity. If it weren’t for others having the same experiences.”

3. Kevin the Friendly Ghost

A woman named FitNurse6 on Reddit shares the story of the ghost of a little boy in her house. “When I was 10 years old, we moved into a new house. My parents let me stay home from school while they unpacked, and I was preoccupied with coloring books. In my brand new crayons pack, the blue crayon was missing. I went downstairs to check out the basement, and my blue crayon was next to the hot water heater. Scribbled on it there, it said ‘Hi, Katie, I’m Kevin’. I was so confused why my name was there. I started school and my new classmates were like, “Do you live in Kevin’s house?! Your house is haunted!!” It turned out that Kevin was an 8 year old boy that lived in our house prior to us. He got hit by a car in the front yard.”

“Kevin would write notes if you left out a pen and paper, open and close doors, adjust the thermostat and turn on Christmas music. We had a swing set in the backyard. Even on the hottest days of summer, the left swing would be moving back and forth. When I was a teenager, I was very upset and considered committing suicide during Christmas break. Out of nowhere, the police just randomly showed up at my house. The policeman said he was patrolling our neighborhood and felt very strongly that there was something wrong at our house. He stopped by just to make sure everyone was okay. I’m absolutely certain Kevin had something to do with it.”

2. The Girl in the Attic

A user called EconomyCactus recounts the ghost of a little girl living in his house. “The attic of my childhood home had two large closets that ran along the entire wall on both sides. It was essentially a 30-foot long crawl space. One day, a friend and I went crawling from one side to the other with flashlights. Then I saw a girl sitting there, in the corner. I was beyond terrified. This girl looked normal, had blonde hair, a nice dress and seemed friendly. I stayed silent, and got out of the closet. Told my friend what I saw, and he said he didn’t see it. But he had a strong feeling come over him, and he didn’t want to go back in. My parents would occasionally send me up to the attic to get something, and the crawl space doors would swing open.”

“I would lose toys and wouldn’t be able to find them anywhere. Months later, my parents would be getting the Christmas presents out of the attic and would find my missing toys in the crawl space. When I was 8 years old, I leashed up my dog to go take on the monster in the attic. My dog, usually up for anything, REFUSED to go off the top step. My parents never believed me with all the weird things that happened. I would get blamed for things. Leaving lights on, toys all over, things I knew I didn’t do. We moved out when I was 10. Not a week passes before the new owners call us to ask if the house is haunted. The daughter sleeps in the attic, and she says that she has been playing with a blonde haired girl at night.”

1. The Guardian of a Haunted House

A Reddit user called ICountFish had a house sitting nightmare. “I used to live in a big 6-bedroom house by myself, because I was looking after the place for my boss. The first couple of months were fine. But when winter came, I started hearing things coming from the second floor. I lived pretty much exclusively on the 1st floor. It started with little bumps, bangs, and footsteps coming from above. I had been up to the second floor to check up on it. One unfinished room was a sort of walk-in closet for one of the upstairs bedrooms. The door of the room was open when I went up to investigate the noises. So I shut the door and locked it. Two nights later, more footsteps. The door that led to the unfinished room would not stay closed or locked.”

“I tried everything. Eventually I pushed the bed up against the door to keep it from opening. That seemed to work, except that the door would continue to unlock on its own. As time passed- I would hear noises all over the house. Mostly footsteps, but the occasional THUMP. I cannot explain how horrifying it is to hear footsteps up and down the hall door during your morning shower. Eventually, I moved out, but another employee moved in to take my place. His stay there only lasted one month. The story he told me is that he was shaving one morning and he heard a SLAM like someone dropped a heavy stack of books right outside his bedroom door. Then heavy footsteps like someone running down the hall. He won’t stay there anymore. After that, no one in the company will live in the house.”
