Stop Buying these Household Essentials, It’s a Waste of Money

Many of us have fallen into the trap of thinking that we need to buy certain household essentials in order to maintain a clean and organized home. However, the truth is that many of these products are not only unnecessary, but they can also be a waste of money. In fact, some of the items that we consider to be must-haves can actually be harmful to both our wallets and the environment. Here at Home Addict, we’ll take a closer look at some of the common household essentials that you may want to think twice about purchasing. By cutting down on these unnecessary purchases, you’ll not only save money, but you just might reduce your environmental footprint, too.

Expensive Cleaning Products

It may be tempting to buy name-brand cleaning products, especially if they’re associated with some of your favorite celebrities. But basic household essentials like vinegar, salt, baking soda, and lemon can effectively clean many surfaces and are much cheaper than specialty cleaning products. (They’re also more eco-friendly, too). Some expensive cleaning products claim to have additional benefits, such as “all-natural” or “organic” ingredients, but there is often little scientific evidence to support these claims. Not only that, but in many cases, store-brand or generic cleaning products can perform just as well as their expensive brand-name counterparts. Dollar Tree brand cleaning products, for example, are just $1.25 each and they do exactly what the expensive brands can do. Many expensive cleaning products contain similar ingredients to their budget-friendly alternatives, and the additional cost may not reflect any significant difference in quality.

Paper Towels

One of the household essentials that almost everyone on the planet buys is paper towels. However, reusable cloth towels are a more cost-effective alternative. Paper towels are a single-use product that contributes to waste and pollution. Unlike reusable cloth towels, paper towels cannot be used multiple times and must be thrown away after each use. This can lead to frequent purchases and a high cost over time. Additionally, the production of paper towels requires a significant amount of resources such as trees, water, and energy. This all has a negative impact on the environment. Some alternatives to paper towels include reusable cloth towels, napkins, or rags. These options can be used multiple times and washed as needed. Ultimately, the decision to use paper towels or alternatives depends on your personal needs. However, for those who are looking to reduce waste and save money, reusable cloth towels can be more sustainable.

Brand-Name Batteries

Generic or store-brand batteries are often just as good as their brand-name counterparts and can save you money in the long run. In many cases, store-brand or generic batteries can perform just as well as their brand-name counterparts, making the higher price tag unnecessary. Batteries are often made by a few large manufacturers, who sell their products under multiple brand names. This means that the same product can be sold under different brand names at different prices, leading to higher costs for brand-name batteries. You might want to consider buying rechargeable batteries, instead. This can cost more up-front. But it theoretically saves money over time.

Single-Use Kitchen Gadgets

Kitchen tools are essentials when you cook at home. But many of us can get carried away by advertisements on the newest gadget out there. Many kitchen gadgets like egg slicers, melon ballers, and garlic presses are used infrequently and can be replaced by other kitchen tools like knives. Single-use kitchen gadgets can be expensive, especially when compared to multi-purpose kitchen tools that can be used for many different tasks. Kitchen gadgets can take up valuable storage space in your kitchen, which can be a problem for those with limited space. Multi-purpose kitchen tools are more compact and easier to store. For example, you can use a good chef’s knife to smash garlic and slice a banana. You don’t need a garlic press or a banana slicer to do the job.

Disposable Razors

Whether it’s your face or your legs, most of us shave. Disposable razors are essentials in the bathroom, but they are often considered a waste of money. Investing in a high-quality reusable razor can save you money over time and reduce waste. Disposable razors are often sold at a premium price, and must be replaced frequently as the blades become dull. Over time, this can add up to a significant cost. Disposable razors are often made with cheaper materials that may not last as long as more durable options, making them a less cost-effective choice in the long run. In many cases, reusable razors, such as safety razors or straight razors, can provide a closer, more comfortable shave than disposable razors. This can help you save money and reduce waste, while still achieving a great shave.

Air Fresheners

Natural air fresheners like open windows, potted plants, and essential oils can be just as effective and better for the environment than synthetic air fresheners. Air fresheners can be expensive, especially when compared to more natural alternatives. Over time, the cost of purchasing air fresheners can add up, making them a less cost-effective choice. Some air fresheners contain chemicals that can have negative health effects, such as irritating the eyes, skin, or respiratory system. Additionally, many air fresheners contain fragrances that can trigger allergies or migraines in some people. Air fresheners are a single-use product that contributes to waste. In many cases, air fresheners only mask unpleasant odors, rather than eliminating the source of the odor. More natural alternatives, such as essential oils or baking soda, can help to absorb odors and improve the overall air quality in your home.

Pre-Packaged Food

When you’re busy with work, school, or family, pre-packaged food can sometimes qualify as essentials. If you don’t have time to cook, it’s the quickest and easiest option. However, pre-packaged meals, snacks, and sauces can be much more expensive than making them from scratch. They often also contain less healthy ingredients. Pre-packaged foods are often sold at a premium price, compared to buying raw ingredients and cooking meals from scratch. Over time, the cost can add up. Pre-packaged foods are often high in sodium, sugar, and unhealthy fats. They can be lacking in essential vitamins and minerals. Cooking from scratch, using fresh ingredients, provides greater control over the nutritional content of your meals. Pre-packaged foods often come in plastic packaging that contributes to waste and pollution. Cooking from scratch and using reusable containers helps reduce waste and promote sustainability.

Bottled Water

Investing in a reusable water bottle and a water filtration system can save you money and reduce waste compared to buying bottled water. Bottled water can be significantly more expensive than tap water, especially when purchased in large quantities. Over time, the cost of purchasing bottled water can add up. The production of plastic water bottles contributes to pollution and waste. Many plastic bottles end up in landfills or the ocean. While some people believe that bottled water is of higher quality than tap water, this is not always the case. In many regions, tap water is treated and tested regularly, making it just as safe and clean as bottled water. While bottled water can be convenient for people on the go, it is also possible to carry a reusable water bottle. This eliminates the need for single-use plastic bottles and reduces waste.

Brand-Name Laundry Detergents

Everyone in the modern world has laundry detergent on their essentials list. Generic or store-brand laundry detergents are often just as effective as their brand-name counterparts and can save you money in the long run. Brand-name laundry detergents are often sold at a premium price. While some people believe that brand-name detergents are more effective than generic alternatives, this is not always the case. Many generic and store-brand detergents are formulated to perform just as well as brand-name. If you want to buy brand-name detergent, there are many coupons available to knock down the price. It ends up being the same as buying the generic brand, anyway. Many cheaper brands have thinner soap, which means they are watering it down. However, AmazonBasics sells a Tide Pod knockoff that ends up being significantly cheaper per pod.

Excessive Cable Channels

If you haven’t subscribed to the “cord cutting” culture yet, it may be time to jump on the bandwagon. According to CinemaBlend, 48% of Americans have some sort of streaming subscription like Netflix, Hulu, or HBO Max. Many people subscribe to more cable channels than they actually watch, which can be a waste of money. Cable TV packages with a large number of channels can be significantly more expensive than basic packages, too. Many popular shows and movies are available for streaming online, eliminating the need for cable TV altogether. Subscribing to streaming services can offer a more cost-effective and convenient way to access content. Depending on the cable package, it costs anywhere from $20 to $80 per month. Compare that to Netflix, which costs just $10 a month for their basic plan. On top of that, YouTube is completely free to watch.

Plastic Wrap and Aluminum Foil

When you’re shopping for your household essentials, you’re probably buying aluminum foil or plastic wrap at least once a month. But reusable containers and beeswax wraps are more environmentally friendly and cost-effective. The cost of buying plastic wrap and aluminum foil can add up over time, especially if you use them frequently. Both plastic wrap and aluminum foil are also single-use items that generate a significant amount of waste. Using reusable containers instead can help reduce waste and promote sustainability. To make matters worse, some forms of plastic wrap contain harmful chemicals that can leach into food. Glass food containers can help reduce exposure to toxic substances.

Expensive Bed Sheets

Not long ago, here on Home Addict, we had a list about Household Items That Are Worth Splurging On. In that list, I say that it’s worth your money to buy high quality bed sheets. Keep in mind that there is a huge difference between “good” sheets and crazy-expensive sheets. High-end bed sheets may be more comfortable, but mid-range or budget-friendly sheets can be just as soft and durable and save you money. For many people, the added cost may not be worth it, especially if they don’t notice a significant difference in comfort or quality. After all, comfort is subjective. What one person finds comfortable may not be the same for another. Many expensive bed sheets may not last as long as their less expensive counterparts. Higher prices do not always equate to longer lifespan, and you may find yourself having to replace your bed sheets more frequently.

Pre-Packaged Spices

If you cook a lot at home, spices are most likely on your essentials list. However, for people who only cook once in a blue moon, they might buy into the scam of pre-packaged spices. (Like the photo you see above.) They market these as being “easier” to prepare a meal, because they’re giving you multiple spices in one package, just in small amounts. Buying spices in bulk or growing your own herbs can save you money and give you fresher ingredients for cooking. Pre-packaged spices tend to be more expensive. This can add up over time, especially if you use spices frequently. Pre-packaged spices often come in small containers that generate a significant amount of waste. Overall, it’s much better to buy a large container of a spice you’ll use in multiple dishes. Or, buy a combination spice like “Italian Seasoning”, which blends together oregano, basil, thyme and rosemary.

Brand-Name Pet Food

Store-brand or generic pet food can often be just as nutritionally balanced as brand-name options, but at a lower cost. The added cost may not be worth it, especially if they don’t notice a significant difference in their pet’s health. Some generic pet foods use high-quality ingredients and are nutritionally balanced, making them a good choice for your pet. Unlike human food, there is limited regulation of pet food. So it can be difficult to know what is actually in the food you’re feeding your pet. Make sure to read the ingredient label and do your research to ensure that your pet is getting the nutrients they need. Brand-name pet food companies often use marketing tactics to make their food seem more premium, making claims about the quality of the ingredients. However, these claims may not always be backed up by scientific evidence.

Excessive Gym Memberships

If you’re not using your gym membership regularly, it may be a waste of money. Consider alternative options such as outdoor exercise, home workout equipment, or online workout classes. Consider whether you can afford the monthly or annual fee and whether the cost is worth it for the benefits you will receive. For many people, joining a gym is not enough to motivate them to exercise. If you’re not motivated to go to the gym regularly, you may be wasting your money on a membership. Depending on the gym, you may find that the equipment or classes available do not meet your needs. This can make it difficult to stick to a workout routine and get the results you’re looking for. It’s totally possible to get exercise for free. For example, why go to a gym to use the treadmill when you can go jogging or hiking instead?

Disposable Coffee Pods

While disposable coffee pods are convenient, they may not be worth the added cost if you’re looking for a high-quality cup of coffee. For a while, I was on the Keurig bandwagon just like so many other people. But after a couple machines broke down on me, I switched over to a ceramic pour-over coffee dripper. I’ll never look back. It’s cheaper, easier to clean, and equally as easy to make. In some environments like an office kitchenette, a Keurig is still the most convenient thing in the world. But disposable coffee pods create a lot of waste, since each pod is meant to be used only once. This can have a negative impact on the environment, as the pods are not recyclable and often end up in landfills. Investing in a reusable coffee maker that uses ground coffee can save you money and reduce waste in the long run.

Landline phones

It’s rare for people to have landline phones anymore. With the widespread availability of mobile phones, many people no longer need a landline phone. Roughly 33% of American households still have landlines. You may be one of the households still paying for a service you don’t use. Unlike mobile phones, landline phones are tied to a specific location and cannot be easily carried with you. This limits their usefulness, especially for people who are frequently on the go. There are alternative options for landline service, such as internet-based phone services (VoIP) that are less expensive and offer more functionality than traditional landline phones. My parents transferred their old landline number to a VoIP service. They like to keep the number active, just in case family or friends decide to call the old number.

Expensive storage containers

High-end storage containers can be more expensive than basic storage containers, and the cost may not be justified for everyday use. If you’re not using your storage containers on a regular basis, the investment in expensive containers may not be worth it, either. I know that a lot of us are tempted to go places like The Container Store. This is especially true if you watch shows like the Home Edit, or get inspired by our lists of Organization Hacks. But the reality is that they’re just containers. It’s possible to go places like Dollar Tree and have a container that holds up just as long as the expensive counterpart. And while some people might consider them essentials, there are often alternative options on how to store your stuff. For example, buying a sturdy dresser of drawers might be more useful than a bunch of containers on shelves.

Monthly subscription boxes

Subscribing to monthly boxes for things like beauty products, snacks, or clothing can be tempting. But they can add up quickly and become a waste of money if you don’t use the items you receive. Monthly subscription boxes often come with a recurring fee, which can add up over time and become an unnecessary expense. Some monthly subscription boxes may not be tailored to your specific interests or needs, and you may receive items that you don’t want or use. There are many alternative options for discovering and purchasing products, such as online shopping, visiting local stores, or searching for deals and discounts. For discovering new products, YouTube is an excellent resource. People make review videos all the time, so you can get someone’s opinion before trying out the product. For personal care items, places like eBay and even Sephora are great for finding beauty samples.

Pre-packaged produce

When you’re grocery shopping for essentials, fruits and vegetables should always be on your list. However, a lot of people have the bad habit of buying pre-packaged produce. Fresh produce is often cheaper and of higher quality when purchased loose rather than pre-packaged fruits and vegetables. Pre-packaged produce may not be as fresh as loose produce, as the packaging can slow down the ripening process and increase the risk of spoilage. To make matters worse, pre-packaged produce often results in more waste, as the packaging is discarded after use and may not be recyclable. And, apparently, according to scientists, pre-cutting food and exposing it to air and light actually reduces its vitamin content. So on top of it being more expensive and wasteful, it’s also less healthy!

Brand-Name Over-the-Counter Medications

Store-brand or generic over-the-counter medications can often be just as effective as their brand-name counterparts and save you money. Brand-name medications are often more expensive than generic options, despite having the same active ingredients. Many brand-name medications are no more effective than their generic counterparts, and the extra cost for the brand name is not justified. For example, the combo box of Dayquil and Nyquil Liquid Gels on the left costs approximately $22.00, while the box on the right costs just $1.25 from Dollar Tree. Yes, the name brand gives more pills per box. But they are still charging 30 cents per pill, while the generic brand is just under 10 cents per pill. Both medications do the exact same thing. Sure, it’s slightly more inconvenient to buy multiple boxes when you’re sick. But during my last cold, I only needed to spend $2.50 on two boxes

Expensive Printer Ink

A lot of people are resigned to buying expensive printer ink, because you believe that it’s just how things are. But if you don’t use your printer frequently, buying expensive ink cartridges can be a waste of money. Consider using a printing service somewhere like Staples. Or purchase a printer with low ink consumption, instead. Some printers use more ink than necessary, leading to increased cost. Many people end up buying more ink than they actually need, and the unused portion may go to waste as it dries out. If you’re looking to save money on printer ink, consider purchasing a printer with high-yield ink cartridges, which can provide more ink at a lower cost per milliliter. Use a printer that has a separate black and color cartridge, as this allows you to replace only the color that runs out instead of having to replace both cartridges at once.

Disposable Mop Heads

A lot of people enjoy using disposable mop heads from brands like Swiffer, because they’re easy to use. However, the cost of disposable mop heads can add up over time, as they need to be replaced frequently. This can be more expensive in the long run compared to investing in a high-quality reusable mop head that can be cleaned and used again. Reusable mop heads can save you money and reduce waste. The only potential upside to using a disposable mop head is that it can sometimes be more sanitary. Instead of using the same mop over and over again, you’re getting any bacteria off the flood and then throwing it away. However, if you’re using bleach water to mop a floor, it will kill the bacteria regardless.

Expensive Furniture Covers

People use furniture covers for a lot of reasons. They might help you protect your brand new furniture. Or, if your furniture is already worn down, you can hide the wear by putting a cover over it. However, not all furniture covers are made equal. Budget-friendly furniture covers can protect your furniture and save you money compared to buying expensive covers. Furniture covers are often used even when they are not necessary, such as when furniture is not in use or when it’s already protected. This can lead to overuse and wear and tear on the cover, reducing its effectiveness and lifespan. Furniture covers are designed for short-term use and may need to be replaced if they become damaged or worn out. This can be an inefficient use of resources and money, especially if the covers are expensive. Furniture covers can be bulky and difficult to store, too.

Excessive Phone Data Plans

If you don’t use your phone for data-intensive activities, paying for a high-data plan can be a waste of money. Many people sign up for more data than they actually need, which can result in a significant amount of unused data each month. This can be an inefficient use of resources and money, especially if the excess data goes unused. Some phone data plans come with hidden fees, such as overage fees for using more data than what was included in the plan. These fees can add up quickly and significantly increase the cost of your phone bill. If you have access to Wi-Fi, there’s no need to pay for a large amount of data on your phone plan. With advancements in technology, the average data usage per person is decreasing. This means that many people can get by with a smaller data plan and save money in the process.

Brand-Name Electronics Accessories

Nowadays, electronic accessories have become household essentials. You might automatically go to the company that made your phone or computer, assuming that their product is the best. Store-brand or generic electronics accessories can often be just as effective as their brand-name counterparts and save you money. Brand-name electronics accessories are often significantly more expensive than their generic or off-brand counterparts. This premium price is often due to the brand name and marketing costs, not necessarily the quality of the product. Many electronics accessories have a short product lifespan and are replaced frequently, such as phone cases or screen protectors. Spending a large amount of money on a brand-name accessory may not be worth it if it’s going to be replaced soon. For example, you can see in the photo that an Apple USB wall adapter costs $20, while it’s just $1.25 for the same product at Dollar Tree.

Excessive Home Security Systems

If you live in a low-crime area, paying for a comprehensive home security system may not be necessary. Consider alternative security measures such as motion-sensor lights and window locks. High-end home security systems can be expensive, with some systems costing thousands of dollars. This cost can be a significant burden for homeowners, especially if they don’t need all the features offered by a high-end system. While home security systems can be a useful tool for deterring crime and protecting property, it’s important not to rely too heavily on technology. People should still take basic precautions to secure their homes, such as locking doors and windows, regardless of whether they have a security system or not. Nowadays, there are a lot of affordable security cameras out there, like the Ring Doorbell that will help you see anyone who comes to your door.

Premium Coffee Beans

Sorry, Millennials. I know we all get harassed about our coffee addictions. Out of all the essentials in this life, coffee is at the top for some people. But it truly does cost a lot of money. While premium coffee beans can have a higher quality taste, many budget-friendly coffee options can be just as satisfying and save you money. Premium coffee beans can be considered a waste of money depending on an individual’s personal preference and budget. Some people may not be able to taste the difference between premium and regular coffee beans, either. Additionally, making coffee at home with premium beans can be more expensive than purchasing a cup of coffee from a café. In the end, it depends on the individual’s preferences, budget, and willingness to pay for the extra quality.

Name Brand Dishwasher Soap

Many name brand dishwasher detergents have similar active ingredients to their generic counterparts. There may not be a significant difference in their cleaning power. Name brand dishwasher detergents are often sold at a premium price compared to generic or store-brand alternatives, which can make them a waste of money. Some people use more dishwasher detergent than necessary because they believe that using more will result in a cleaner load of dishes. However, this is not the case and can actually lead to poor cleaning performance and a buildup of detergent residue. You can also make your own dishwasher soap at home. You can buy the generic brand from Dollar Tree for $1.25 a box. Overall, you could spend $5 a month on dishwasher soap to run two loads per day (60 loads.) Compare that to Finish dishwasher tabs, which costs $11 for 60 tabs.

Single-Use Cleaning and Beauty Products

Disposable wipes, cleaning sprays, and air fresheners can all be replaced with more eco-friendly and cost-effective alternatives. Reusable cleaning cloths or rags are a great option, as they can be used multiple times and can be washed and reused. You can use a homemade cleaning solution made from natural ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice, which are effective and non-toxic. For example, a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar can be used to clean most surfaces. You can also make a paste from baking soda and water to clean tough stains. Additionally, you can make your own air freshener by mixing water and essential oils in a spray bottle, or by using natural options like opening windows, using houseplants, or boiling citrus peels. This is also true for single-use beauty products, like makeup wipes to remove mascara.

Credit: Home Addict

Dryer Sheets

For some people, it’s hard to imagine doing their laundry without dryer sheets. Dryer sheets may leave your clothes feeling soft and smelling fresh, but they are often filled with chemicals and contribute to waste. Instead, consider using wool dryer balls, which can reduce drying time and naturally soften clothes without the need for chemicals. You can also add a few drops of essential oils to the balls to add a pleasant scent. Another option is to simply hang your clothes to dry, which not only saves money but also reduces your environmental impact. Air-drying can also help to preserve the fabric and color of your clothes over time. If you prefer the convenience of a dryer, consider using a lower heat setting to save energy and reduce wear and tear on your clothes.

Expensive Personal Care and Beauty Products

Many personal care products, such as high-end shampoos and lotions, can be expensive. They may not offer much benefit over less expensive options. Instead, consider looking for natural and affordable alternatives, such as bar soap or homemade beauty products made from natural ingredients like coconut oil and essential oils. If I were to buy all of the high-end beauty products I love, it would cost me a small fortune on Sephora. For example, instead of buying a $68 moisturizer by Drunk Elephant, I go for a small $3 bottle of Aveeno lotion instead. And a lot of products will boast how they use natural ingredients. Well…You can literally just buy the natural ingredients yourself. For example, why buy expensive Vitamin C serum when you can eat oranges or take vitamin tablets?

Credit: Shutterstock

Cleaning Gadgets

There are many cleaning gadgets on the market that can be tempting to buy because they seem to promise quick and easy cleaning solutions. However, many of these gadgets can be expensive and not as effective as simpler cleaning tools. Electric scrub brushes can be useful for cleaning grout, but they can be expensive and not always necessary. Handheld vacuums can be useful for cleaning hard-to-reach areas, but they can be expensive and not always as effective as a regular vacuum cleaner. Steam cleaners can be a good option for cleaning floors without using harsh chemicals, but they can also be expensive and require a lot of setup time. By using simpler and more cost-effective cleaning tools, you can save money and get just as clean of a result. Additionally, many of these simpler tools are also more eco-friendly, since they don’t require electricity or batteries to operate.

Credit: Home Addict

Disposable Dishware

Disposable dishware, such as paper plates, cups, and utensils, can be a convenient solution for picnics, parties, and other events. However, they are often made of materials that are not biodegradable and can take a long time to break down in landfills. Additionally, using disposable dishware regularly can add up to significant costs over time. Investing in reusable dishes, cups, and utensils can be a more eco-friendly and cost-effective option in the long run. Consider buying a set of reusable dishes and utensils for your home, and bringing them along to picnics and other events. You can also buy durable plastic or metal cups to use instead of disposable plastic cups.
