There are many rooms that you know exactly what to do with, such as your bedroom, living room, and even that spare room down the hall. You spend much time preparing the rooms to look lovely and enhance your home’s true beauty. There are always other rooms that you’re not exactly sure what to do with – like the attic.

It’s a place in your home that might be stuffed with items you don’t know what to do with or even objects from the previous owner. Your children might be too scared to go up there, which can make it the perfect home-getaway, but who wants to spend time in a room full of dust and junk, er, antiques? This article will teach you how to transform your dark and creepy attic into a dreamy place that will make every member of your family swoon.

Instead of running to your local library every day, create one in your home to show off all of the great reading material you have to your friends and family. Go on, make them jealous! Shutterstock.

Make It a Personal Library

Do you have so many books and you don’t know what to do with them all? Plus, other members of your family have books. While seeing reading material everywhere you turn does help improve your mindset, it can also lead you to feel that your home is a bit cluttered. Sometimes you think, “It would be great to have just one place to store all of our books.”

Then you look up to your attic, and a lightbulb goes off. That’s right; you can turn this part of your home into a perfect library with reading and studying areas. You can build your bookcases of different sizes so everyone in your family can have their own space.

Build a Bedroom

There comes a time when most children can’t stand to share a room with their sibling or want your space away from everyone else. When it happens, turn to your attic because it can give you some of the best space to build a bedroom.

There are tons of bedroom ideas on Pinterest and other sites that will let you discover your ideas and likes. You can also create from the depths of your imagination. If you build a bedroom for your children, and your attic is big enough, they can each have their side and be decorated differently. For instance, once could have the solar system while the other has a jungle.

Create an Apartment

You have the bedroom idea, now dig a little deeper. Depending on the size of your attic, you could build a one-bedroom apartment or a loft. While you might need to hire a few professionals to look at adding in plumbing or other necessities, this can give your home added value.

You can also build it as a place to rent out or set it up as an Airbnb. Of course, you’ll need to ensure you get all the right permits, and everything is up to code. But, it can help you generate a source of income that you can put away for retirement.

Turn It Into a Guest Space

Instead of making an extra room for you or your family, you can make it a guest space. You can set it up with one or two beds to look more like a comfortable and inviting Airbnb or hotel room for a lengthy stay.

Plus, if your children are on the outs or you need space from your partner, you can always dash up there to take time alone. Get in touch with your interior designer by creating a unique look for your special guests. You can surf the web to see what other types of guest spaces are around or look to your friends to see what they would like to have if they slept over.

Get Spooky in a Haunted Attic

If you love Halloween, you’ll enjoy this idea. Build your attic as a haunted house type stop for trick or treaters during the holiday. You can decorate it with a bunch of items that will make them want to scream yet come back the following years; after all, most people like to be a bit spooked during the creepiest night of the year.

You can even charge admission and get your friends and family to help as they dress up as ghouls and goblins. The best part is you don’t have to take it down unless you want to create a different space for the rest of the year.

Create Something Different in Every Corner

If you have a daycare or children who want their own space, clean out the closet, and give them what they want. You can take advantage of every nook and cranny by building something that makes each one happy.

You can give them an area where they can hide out or be with their friends without bothering them. They might create a reading corner, a place to play games, or just a play area with all of their favorite toys. You can even put up an office in one corner so you can work while your children play – just don’t forget to take a few play breaks!

Say Hello to the Closet of Your Dreams

Is your closet just not big enough? Do you feel that it’s unorganized because you just don’t have enough space? Are you unable to find some of your favorite clothes because you don’t know where you tucked them? Maybe you even have some clothes stored in totes because that is the only thing you could do to create enough room.

If you have an unused attic or space, build the closet of your dreams. You can have shelves for your shoes, hat racks, vanity for your makeup, and so many wardrobes and dressers to hang and fold your clothes. You might create such a perfect place that you hide in your closet as often as you can.

Fall In Love With Your Extra Bathroom

Is your bathroom too small? Maybe your children are growing up and using the main bathroom more than you can to acknowledge. It just seems like no matter how hard you try to establish a schedule, it doesn’t work, and you have people pounding on the door for someone to hurry up so they can get in.

Add an extra bathroom with your attic space. Even though you might need to call a plumber, it can increase the value of your home. Plus, it might be big and sturdy enough to house that Jacuzzi or giant-sized tub you’ve wanted.

Craft a Playroom

Paint your attic in bright colors, such as yellow, orange, blue, green, and violet. Then set up your kids’ favorite toys along with dressers and even a mini house for their own delight. You might also craft a large playhouse at one end of the attic. The possibilities are endless, and you can always ask your children what they want. Who knows, you might be building a rocket!

Turn your creepy room into one of the best places for your children to play and hang out. Let them play all day long while you do what you need to. You can also create an area that is catered to you to keep an eye on them. Plus, you can hide the mess from your surprise guests.

Reward That Special Lady With a Space for Her

You’ve heard of the “she shed” well, what about transferring the idea of a shed into the attic? You can create a room specifically for you, whether it’s to hide out when you need a break, get work done, or hide snacks from your family.

You can build your dream room that has everything you desire from music to knick-knacks. The best part, you don’t have to worry about people leaving a mess for you to clean up – you just have to worry about your own mess that you need to clean up, eventually.

What happens in the man cave stays in the man cave! Unless your partner wants to know what’s going on, of course. Shutterstock.

Build a Man Cave

You might even look into building a cave for that special guy in your life. You can decorate it any way you want from a game corner to a bar area. Of course, you can also hide the snacks from your family because we all need a few treats that we don’t have to share.

Maybe you want to start a hobby and don’t like being interrupted in the garage or your home office. There are a million things that you can do in your specified man cave.

Get Crafty

Have you always wanted a craft room? Now is your chance with your attic. Go crazy doing a bit of shopping at your favorite craft store and get a few ideas to start. You might begin to paint, sew, or do anything else of your liking.

You can start your side business selling your crafts on Etsy. The possibilities are endless. All you need to do is dig into your passions, talents, and get creative. You might find that you’re developing a strong business and start working out of your attic.

Turning your attic into an office can give you the space to stay motivated and get your work done. Shutterstock

Set Up a Home Office

It’s not always easy to find space for a home office, especially when it happened in what seems to be the blink of an eye. You might be thinking of working remotely forever, starting your own business, or your company is still not in the works of bringing everyone back to the building. You’ve been moving from the dining room table to the couch to a small corner.

It’s time to set up your location for good (face it, your office will come in handy even when you go back to your work building). If you have an attic full of junk or just collecting dust bunnies, it’s time to transform it into your dream workspace. You can paint the walls, decorate it with the best items tailored to your needs, and so much more!

You can build a room with your favorite games and even add a little bar when you’re hanging out with your buddies. Shutterstock.

Turn It Into a Game Room

You don’t need to build anything fancy in your attic. It doesn’t even have to be finished – it’s a space that you can decorate as you want and then focus on finishing it over time. When you do finish it, fancy isn’t a word that you should worry you.

You can use a rustic retreat that makes your attic look like an old cabin and build a game room. You can have a place for your friends to sleep that are a couple of cots or even set up a camping tent. Your friends can come over to the game until you’re all too tired to crawl anywhere further than your attic’s sleeping arrangements. You can have everything from an Xbox to a Playstation to board games. You might even get a pool table and dartboard to mix it up a bit.

Build a pantry, so you never have to worry about storing all your dry goods and supplies again. Shutterstock.

Do a Pantry

After the current crisis, you probably realize that you need to ensure you have enough groceries to last you a few weeks or months. You might have a different idea about stocking up, which includes making sure you have an extra container of toilet paper and disinfectant wipes. Either way, you’ve also realized that your pantry near the kitchen doesn’t allow for much extra space, so now you have the trouble of finding room to store all your dry goods and supplies.

If you have an attic that just collects dust and things you don’t use, look up those stairs and see what type of pantry you can build. If your attic is big enough, you might only need half or a quarter of it and then can leave the rest for storage or create a getaway room on the other side.

Sometimes you need an organized space in your attic to store furniture that you can’t get rid of or save for someone. Shutterstock.

Organize for a Storage Room

There is nothing wrong with having your attic as a storage room. You might be saving furniture and other items for when your children move. Perhaps you’re looking for a bigger place yourself, or you can’t get rid of the things you have up there. You also might have other plans for donations or other ideas.

Whatever it is, you can use your attic as storage, but also a clean and organized place where you know what is up there and where it is. You might find that you’re comfortable spending time working on a few projects or just drinking a coffee while looking out the window alone as you reminisce about your life.

You might like an attic with little light and a few items because it helps you write the horror story in your dreams — or nightmares. Shutterstock.

Enjoy a Hobby Retreat

You can do more than crafts and work in your attic. You can also create a space that is specific to your hobby. If you’re a writer or an artist, you can set up your workspace and then a few cozy areas to relax and find inspiration. You might have a bookcase or create different feature walls throughout your attic.

You can use your attic to add your personality into space so you can be comfortable and motivated to improve your skills and talents. You can even create a seating area for when your friends come over, family comes up to visit, or you start to have clients. Remember, you don’t need to create the perfect space right away. It might be something that you build slowly as your hobby grows.

Say Yes to a Home Theater

Have you been dreaming of a place in your house for a home theater? Do you keep looking around your home and wondering how long it is because you think you need to wait for one of your children to move out? If you have an attic, it’s time to stop thinking that you need to wait and start living your dream.

You don’t need a large screen; you just need a television to let everyone see the movie. You don’t need to create rows of seats, instead just have a few comfortable chairs for your family and friends. You might have chairs that people can lay down and fall asleep on. It’s also handy to have a little end table for drinks and snacks.

You no longer need to worry about traveling hours to have your dream spa vacation when you can walk up to your steps instead. Shutterstock.

Transform It Into a Spa

Have you ever wanted to get away, but close to your home so you can go there whenever you want and not worry about your children? If so, a home attic spa might be the perfect getaway for you. Don’t worry about needing to book flights or a hotel room because you can turn your spa into the stay of your dreams and all you need to do is walk up a few steps.

If your attic is large enough, you can build a bedroom in one corner and the spa with a Jacuzzi. You can purchase luxe features with a soaker tub and frameless shower. You can even get a new skylight to help illuminate the many divine features of your space.

Don’t Forget Display Pieces

Are you into antiques or iconic works of art? Do you have enough unique items that you can create your museum? Maybe you like setting up themes around your house and find that your attic space is the perfect room to decorate with your different ideas. You might also want to practice your interior design skills to show them off for your new side hustle or business.

Display pieces are perfect for an attic because it’s an environment that you can control a little easier than other areas in your home, especially if you have little children. You can set up your unique pieces of furniture, show off your carpentry skills, and even refurbish your furniture to make it look rustic.

Build your luxury master suite in your attic to create the bedroom of your dreams. Shutterstock.

Adore This Master Suite

Go farther than just building a bedroom in your attic – create a master suite. If the space is large enough, half of your attic can be your personal bathroom, and the other half is your master bedroom. This project will create an extra bedroom downstairs, but it gives you more room and area to be you.

You can design the space how you want it from creating a tropical paradise bedroom to a spa-like bathroom. You can even include a reading nook and other features providing you have space. Maybe you want to limit your material items to create a large open area.

The key to building a rock climbing gym is that you focus on safety and make it possible for your kids to climb. Shutterstock.

From an Attic to a Rock Climbing Gym

One unique feature about attics is they have slanting walls, which often makes them unattractive for many of these ideas until you start to build it. However, you can also make use of the walls and create a rock-climbing gym, especially if your children are into it.

Use Pinterest or talk to people who have experience with rock climbing to design your walls for safety and usefulness. You can also contact the nearest gym with this feature and ask them the best process for this type of wall.

You Need a Photography Studio

You’ve always had an interest in photography but never had the place to set up a studio. An attic creates a room for a photography studio because you can design it to take photographs in one end and develop it on another end.

Create a cozy spot so children will be comfortable and interested in playing. You also have room to have different props and an area where adults can relax while waiting for their turn or their children to finish with the pictures.

Build a larger living room in your attic so you can spend quality time with your friends and family. Shutterstock.

Another Living Room

Is your living room rather small downstairs? Do you feel like you can benefit from a more prominent room where your family and friends can come together? If this sounds like you, one of the perfect steps to take for your attic is to make the living room of your dreams.

The walls will help give this space a unique style that you can customize to your desires. You can also create an accent wall where your family can sit and talk without distractions from phones or TV.

Your fur babies will also find a new place to nap when you build a nap zone in the attic. Shutterstock.

Enjoy a Nap Zone

That’s right: create a space that is meant for napping. The attic can provide you with the right amount of silence to help you find a dreamy state. It can also make you feel relaxed because you don’t have to worry about the hustle and bustle in and outside of your home.

You can create space for your children and adults to sleep. You can even decorate your attic to make it cozy and warm with the perfect colors.
