For a lot of people, their laundry room turns into a catch-all for cleaning supplies and things that you’re trying to hide from the rest of the house. But here on Home Addict, we’re going to give you some of the best tips and tricks for laundry room organization.

30. Pro Laundry Room Organization Starts With Jars and Containers to Make Detergent Stylish

One of the easiest ways that you can make your laundry room look a lot nicer is to put your products inside of beautiful containers. There are a lot of companies out there who will sell containers specifically designed to hold your detergent and other accessories. However, you don’t have to buy something that’s specific to laundry. You can buy some beautiful glass jars from your local Dollar Store, thrift store, or even reuse something that you already have in your home.

Clear glass jars look beautiful, and they can make it easier to see how much you have left of any given item. This is very similar to the organization techniques used by The Home Edit, who love to get rid of product boxes and fill up clear plastic containers. The one and only downside to this method is that if you don’t have a separate pantry or cabinet for your excess detergent containers, this method could potentially backfire. So make sure it works for your lifestyle.

29. Consider Changing Your Layout

If you are having issues with your laundry room organization, your layout may be one of the first things to change. Difficulties may be due to the fact that the room is designed in a way that doesn’t make it easy to navigate. Obviously, you can’t do much to change where your appliances are located. But with everything else in the room like cabinets, hampers, and folding table, you should be able to rearrange the furniture so that it makes sense.

The next time you do laundry, ask yourself if the way you reach for things or put your clothing away makes sense. Is there an arrangement that would make your life easier? Once you start thinking with this mindset, you’ll figure out your individual circumstances. Make a sketch of what your layout should be. Hopefully, this is something you can do on your own. Otherwise, use this sketch as a reference to show your contractor.

28. Install a Drying Rack from the Ceiling or Have One Handy

Here in the United States, most of us are used to drying our clothes in the machine. It’s one of the most fast and convenient ways of doing things, even if it’s not the most eco-friendly. However, in most parts of the world, they use drying racks. Why pay for power to dry your clothes when it can be done for free? When I rented an English cottage, I had to experience what it was like to hang-dry all of my clothes for the first time.

In Europe, it is especially common to have a drying rack that is suspended from the ceiling. Even though it’s not very common to find these for sale in American stores, you can still buy a ceiling drying rack online. This can be really useful if you have a few pieces of laundry that need some extra drying time, but you don’t want to run an entire new load again. Or, if you are hand-washing something delicate, and you’d rather hang-dry it instead. In my house, I simply use a clothes hanger on the bar above the machines, and drape my delicates over the hanger to dry in the room. This works just as well, if you’re only drying a few items at a time.

27. Choose a Crazy Wallpaper

For years, wallpaper went out of style. People thought that it was just too over-the-top and garish. And if you were to mention the idea of putting up wallpaper, everyone immediately assumed you were talking about florals in strange colors. However, wallpaper is actually still beautiful, especially when it’s done in small portions. And new styles and prints that exist nowadays look amazing, and nothing like what you saw in your grandma’s house. If you’re not feeling ready to put wallpaper in your living room, your laundry room is a perfect place to experiment with wallpaper.

Since a laundry room is so small, and not typically seen by guests, it’s a good place for you to try it out without fully sticking to it in the rest of your home. Another great place to experiment with crazy wallpaper is in a powder room. A great example of that is in the Daveed Diggs house tour on Architectural Digest. He has custom wallpaper depicting famous people from around the San Francisco Bay. If he put that wallpaper anywhere else in the house, it would be too much. But having it in a small bathroom makes a huge impression.

26. Use a Bookshelf for Extra Storage

Not everyone can afford to have a custom built-in shelving unit for their laundry room. A much cheaper option is to simply buy a bookshelf and use this for extra storage. Bookshelves are typically only $20 to $50 each at places like Walmart and Ikea. They are easy to put together, and they get the job done. You may even be able to relocate a bookshelf from a different room of the house to use in your laundry room.

Admittedly, cheap bookshelves start to buckle under heavy weight over the years, especially if they are made of particle board. So always be careful to distribute the weight evenly. Because of this, it might actually be better to find an old wooden bookshelf from your local thrift store. As long as it’s made of real wood, it will better withstand the test of time.

25. Use a Pegboard Wall to Hang Extra Supplies

Most people would never even think to use a pegboard in their laundry room. It’s usually seen in garages and basements as a play to hang your tools. But it works just as well for a laundry or utility room. You can find pegboard storage almost anywhere, including Ikea, Walmart, and Target. By hanging a pegboard, you can use vertical space to your advantage. With all different types of attachments available, you can fit so much more than you would ever imagine on your wall.

Once you have your objects off of the floor, it clears up so much space. It also gives you more storage opportunities in your laundry room or garage. Once the board is installed, I highly recommend buying a set of pegboard bins and hooks so that you have a lot of options for your laundry room organization.

24. Make a DIY Lint Bin

When you have a clothing dryer, it’s very important to clean out the lint every single time you dry your clothes. In fact, here in the United States, clothes dryers are one of the top causes of household fires. This usually happens with families who have never owned their own dryers before, and they don’t know any better. So be sure to do this!

So, why wouldn’t you just throw your lint away in the trash can? For one, it’s more convenient to have the bin near the machine, instead of going into another room to throw something away. Secondly, it’s perfect if you actually do plan to start a fire. If you have a fireplace or a backyard fire pit, dryer lint combined with cardboard egg cartons are perfect for setting your firewood ablaze. Once you start getting in the habit, dryer lint starts to feel like a valuable resource!

23. Stack the Machines

One of the best ways to save space in your laundry room is by purchasing the machines that are stackable rather than side by side. The only downside to buying stackable laundry machines is that they are usually a lot more expensive than buying the individual pieces. You may end up paying closer to $2,000, when you could get two side-by-side machines for $1,000 or less.

From personal experience, I know there are a lot of pros and cons to using stackable machines. My family had one in our beach cottage. This was perfect for the tiny house, because we had to hide the machine away in a closet. We didn’t have the space for an entire laundry room. However, it was so small, that you couldn’t really clean very much at a time. It was perfect for staying over during the weekends we went to the beach, but it wasn’t enough if you were trying to do daily laundry for a large family. So always keep that in mind.

22. Hampers on Wheels

If you have a lot of hampers to carry throughout the house, it can be taxing on your back. This is especially true if you can only do laundry once a week, and the baskets get heavy. The solution to this issue is to just get hampers on wheels. If you have hardwood or tile floors in your house, this is also much easier than carpet for you to wheel a heavy hamper on the floor.

However, maybe you prefer to keep your hampers in the laundry room and have the entire family put their dirty laundry into the same location. If this is the case, hampers on wheels are still useful. They can slide in and out underneath a folding table or counter top. If you’re able to re-design your laundry room from scratch, incorporating wheeled hampers into the overall design might make a big difference.

21. Make a Dryer Sheet Dispenser

Dryer sheets are necessary for every laundry room, since they help make your dried clothes smell nicer. However, they’re not always the prettiest things in the world. They come in these cardboard boxes that are bright colors. It might not look very good with the elegant vibes that you may be trying to achieve in your laundry room. So one of the next best things you can do is to put your dryer sheets into a dispenser, similar to tissue box covers.

Other people have created a dryer sheet dispenser by using a magnetized magazine rack. You can find these at Dollar Tree, and add magnets to the back so that it sits on the outside of your laundry machine. While this isn’t the prettiest thing in the world, it might make things more convenient for you.

20. Put the Supplies Within Arm’s Reach

When you’re trying to improve on your laundry room organization, one of the things you need to consider is how easy it is for you to grab the products you need. Are you having to go into your pantry every time you want to do laundry? Or do you have your supplies within arm’s reach? In some cases, you can’t help it if you don’t have the space. However, in most cases, you may be able to install a shelf or a cabinet above the machines to give you a place to store your laundry detergent and other supplies exactly where you need it the most.

Remember that even if you aren’t consciously aware of it, small inconveniences and annoyances are going to affect how often you’re willing to do the laundry. The easier you make it for yourself to reach for the supplies you need, the easier the chore becomes for you and everyone else in the family.

19. If You Have The Space, Put a Table or Island in the Room

Not everyone will be able to do this suggestion for laundry room organization. But for those who can, it’s going to make a huge difference. Having a table or a large countertop in a laundry room makes your life so much easier. It gives you a space to keep your baskets off of the floor while you fold your laundry.

And if you are the type of person who needs to stay in your laundry room for an extended period of time, it also gives you a place to sit down. On her Magnolia blog, Joanna Gaines says how her laundry room is actually her favorite room in the house. If she’s doing laundry, the downtime in-between loads is a good excuse for her to sit at her laptop and respond to emails. Obviously, when you’re home, you don’t need to stay in the room the entire time like you would at a laundromat. But this is a way Joanna dedicates all of her time to laundry and self-care.

18. Consider Buying an All-in-One Machine

Here in the United States, most households have two machines for their laundry. We have a washing machine, and a separate dryer. However, in most other parts of the world, they have just one machine that gets both washing and drying done. These machines are always around $1,000. This is more expensive than an individual washing machine, but it’s a lot cheaper than a stackable washer dryer combo. You can find these at Home Depot, but you may need to order one online and have it delivered.

Having an all-in-one machine actually might save you money in the long run. If something breaks, you only have one machine to fix or replace instead of two. It can also potentially save you time if you don’t have to switch the laundry in order to get the full job done. These machines are also a huge space saver. If you have a small laundry room or you’re trying to fit the area into a closet, this could be the solution you have been searching for.

17. Buy Matching Storage Baskets and Containers

If you are installing a shelving system or putting a bookshelf in your laundry room, the next step is to put all of your belongings in baskets or containers. By keeping your supplies in baskets, you’re hiding away anything that might look unattractive. One of the most popular choices is wicker baskets, since you can’t see through them. However, if you are on a very tight budget, you can actually find plastic baskets at your local Dollar Tree for just $1 apiece.

Another reason why baskets are great is that you can pick one up and carry it over to the laundry machine if you need to. They also make it easier when you’re trying to move to a new house, or if you want to transport objects from one area of the home to the other.

16. Create Labels For All of Your Laundry Room Organization

If you are following my advice on this list of having dedicated hampers, baskets, and clear containers, that’s just the first step in the process. When you’re re-organizing all of your laundry supplies, you might get confused about how to find these things. We don’t want you to search through 20 different baskets before you find the thing you need. You can buy a label maker, to find labels to print from places like Etsy or your favorite blog. Dollar Tree also sells cute little chalkboard plaques that you can write on. Stores like Michael’s Crafts also have a lot of different options for you to create your own signs or labels.

Alternately, you can also choose baskets that are see-through. Wire mesh or plastic baskets are often easy to see what’s actually inside with a quick glance. The choice is up to you at the end of the day. But don’t be afraid to experiment with a variety of different labels before you settle on one.

15. Tuck Step Ladders and Ironing Boards Away

Most people have an ironing board and a step ladder in their utility room or laundry room. However, if you don’t have anywhere to properly store this, it can get in the way. Make sure to put your ironing board away when you’re done. This can be hung on a peg board, placed against the wall, or hidden away in an extra closet area of the laundry room.

Some people choose to downgrade their large ironing board for a small tabletop version. This works out perfectly if you have already installed a countertop or table in your laundry room. These smaller ironing boards should be able to fit in-between your machines, or in the space near the wall. (Unless you have machines that fit perfectly flush with the walls.)

14. Paint the Ceiling

In most homes, the ceiling is white. This is normal and comfortable for most people, especially if they’re too scared to have a painted ceiling. White ceilings also help to make a room feel bigger, while a darker ceiling makes a room feel smaller. However, in a laundry room, you can easily experiment with a ceiling color that would otherwise be too over-the-top in another room of the house.

In the photo above, you can see how a dark blue ceiling looks amazing in contrast with the all-white machines, counters, and cabinets. When you have a contrasting color combination like this, it can make a huge impact. The owner of that blue ceiling laundry room is probably very proud of their hard work. 13. Use a Lemonade Dispenser for Liquid Detergent

Earlier on this list, we suggested using clear glass containers to hold your laundry detergent. A super cute idea is to use a plastic or glass lemonade dispenser for your liquid laundry detergent. This way, you can press down on the dispenser and the liquid will pour out. If you can manage to position this over top of your laundry machine, it may fall directly on top of the clothes.

Otherwise, you can save the liquid lid from your Tide or any other liquid detergent, and use this to fill up to the line. Since these containers are clear, it becomes easy to see when the detergent is running low. It’s easy to refill from the top. In the image above, you can see how they have a beautiful little silver cup for their detergent. This doesn’t look bad at all. In fact, it adds to the overall beauty of the vignette.

12. Print Label Decals For Your Detergent Containers

Whenever you’re trying to organize your home, one of the first things you should do is to label your containers. When it comes to the laundry room, you need to label your detergent containers, or any other box that you plan to hold your supplies.

There are printable labels you can find on Pinterest, Etsy, or blogs that offer free printables. You can also create your own labels on Canva or Photoshop, and print them out on sticker paper. If you aren’t familiar, these can be made with machines like the Silhouette or Cricket. Obviously, though, if you only need one set of stickers, it’s much cheaper to pay someone else for what you need.

11. Install an Under-The Shelf Hanging Rod

If you already have shelves in your laundry room, another way for you to add additional storage spaces to have an under-the-shelf hanging rod. These can be purchased from places like Ikea, or online from Amazon. The great thing about having a rod hanging under your shelf is that it gives you additional space for you to hang your laundry.

This is especially useful if you’re trying to steam some wrinkles out of your clothing, or allow the excess heat in the room to air-dry any delicate items that you don’t want to put into the drying machine. It’s also perfect for buying a hanging drying rack, as we mentioned earlier on this list.

10. Add Wall Hooks For Extra Places to Hang

When you walk into a laundry room, you might have things that you need to set aside as you were cleaning. The best way to do this is by having hooks to hang your objects until you’re ready to move them elsewhere. Buying a set of wall hooks is actually very affordable. You can go with a prefabricated set from pretty much anywhere like Target or Walmart. Or, you can buy individual hooks that you can attach to a wall.

Even Dollar Tree has their own versions of the Command hooks for just $1 each. This would be one of the best options if you are in an apartment or a rental home where you are free to make holes in the wall. Command hooks that are attached to a sticky substance can be removed without putting any damage to the wall.

9. Use All of the Available Wall Space

One of the easiest ways to utilize extra storage in a room is to use vertical space. You can’t do anything about the square footage of a room, but you can go up the wall to make the most of your room. This can be done by installing shelves on the wall. You could use floating shelves, hooks, or whatever works in your space. As you can see in the photo below, there is even a heated towel rack, which is an amazing addition to a laundry room.

One of the best options you can also install is cabinets and shelving units. Obviously, this is a lot more expensive than simply finding shelving brackets to install in your space. You know better than anyone else what falls within your budget for your laundry room makeover.

8. Always Keep a Hamper In the Room for Dirty Clothing Drop-off

Even if every person in your household has their own individual hamper, you still never know if there are going to be any accidental spills or small emergencies where you need to take Dirty laundry to the room right away. Instead of having laundry piling up on the floor, It only makes sense to have a dedicated hamper in your laundry room at all times. Obviously, this only makes sense if you have the space to do so in your laundry room. If you have the kind of laundry room that is basically a closet-sized space, it doesn’t make a lot of sense for you to have a hamper there.

However, you might have the space to do it in your bathroom instead. But having a collective hamper for your entire family, everyone knows where to put the laundry when they have something that needs to get cleaned. This prevents dirty laundry from hanging around your entire house or everyone’s bedroom floors. Remember that this hamper doesn’t have to be expensive. Walmart and Target have cheap plastic hampers for $10 or less.

7. Teach Your Kids How to Get Involved

If you have kids, you already know how difficult it is to clean up after them while also keeping the house clean. Once they get old enough to understand how cleaning works, it would be best to teach them the rules about doing laundry. In the beginning, they might not be able to understand how to work the machine. (And you may not trust them to run it until they are a bit older.) But they can still learn the basics at a very early age.

By age 3 to 4, kids are already old enough to understand that they should put their dirty clothes in the hamper. If you separate black, white, and colored clothing, this may also be a great opportunity to teach them colors as well. On a blog called Over the Big Moon, she documents how she taught her 6 year old son how to operate the laundry machine. You definitely want to do this. I can’t tell you how many full-grown adults I met in college who didn’t know how to do their own laundry! Don’t make “adulting” hard for your kids, too.

6. Add Shelving Above the Machines

What is the best storage hacks in a laundry room is to Simply add shelving above the machines. If you don’t have a lot of space, don’t worry. It doesn’t have to be a big deal. All you need to do is buy a floating shelving unit from somewhere like Ikea or Home Depot for under $10.

A project like this can be done in just a couple hours, especially if you know someone who is handy that can help you. Just keep in mind that a lot of these shelving units cannot hold a significant amount of weight. You should not put all of your supplies onto one shelf. Multiple shelves can help to distribute the weight evenly so you don’t end up damaging something.

5. Install a Wooden Laundry Organization System

One of the best things you could do to organize your laundry room is to have an entire organizational system built onto the walls. Personally, I think that the best material to get is wood. Not only is this a natural material, but it is known to last for hundreds of years. It should last for the lifetime of you living in the house, as well as still look great enough for the next family to use. Wood can also be painted any color, or stained in a different wood tone. So if you got tired of the organizational system, you could always paint it to suit your needs. It’s also the most biodegradable choice, especially compared to plastic.

If you’re not a huge fan of wood, there are plenty of wire mesh shelving units available to buy either online or at stores like Home Depot or Ikea. Wire shelves are often more affordable than wood, so it may be a good solution for you in the short term.

4. Share a Closet Space With the Laundry

Many of you out there might be living in a small house and only dream that you can have an entire room dedicated to your laundry. That’s totally fine. Hopefully you can use a lot of these tips in your own home, even if you can’t have a fully dedicated laundry room. Personally, I have my laundry room in a space that is basically the size of a closet. And yet this is enough room for us to keep everything we need to do laundry for 6 people.

If you don’t have a laundry room in your house but you wish that you just have one, you can transform one of your closet spaces into a laundry room. This might work out really well in a guest bedroom where you don’t necessarily need that space for someone’s clothing. There are plenty of people out there who were able to install a washing machine into a closet and still left enough room to hang clothes, a vacuum cleaner, or other objects that they need around the house. 3. Experiment With the Paint Color

The great thing about giving your laundry room a makeover is that you can go crazy with the colors. You might not want to experiment with anything over the top in your main home, but the laundry room gives you the ability to do basically whatever you want. Most laundry rooms are so small that you should be able to paint it even with a small container that only costs $10 or less. Even if you are blessed to have a larger room, this should only cost $20 per gallon if you buy the paint at Walmart.

This is great, because it gives you the freedom to afford to try out the colors that you’ve always wanted. The worst thing that could happen is that you don’t like the color, and you have to paint over it with something else. Even if someone in your house doesn’t agree with your color palette, it’s okay! They don’t have to go in the laundry room, anyway.

Sometimes, people want to have shelves where they can see all of their supplies at a quick glance. This way, you can easily see if you have supplies left without rummaging through closet cabinets. Ikea sells a few different varieties of their “basket drawer units”. These should work in nearly any laundry room.

When you are organizing, you can divide up each shelf to have a different type of supply in each drawer. The only downside of drawers like this is that it can look messy after a while. I have personally used a drawer set like this in my office in the past. However, now I gravitate towards drawers that are enclosed. It’s really up to personal taste.

While this might not be the most beautiful thing in the world, hiding your machines with a curtain can be a great solution to an issue. This is especially true if your machines are looking old and busted after having them for over a decade. For people who keep their laundry machine in their kitchen, this might be a good way to hide that.

In order to do this, you will need to install a tension rod across a counter. Alternately, you may need to hang a shower curtain rod and have a fabric shower curtain hanging there as makeshift doors. Make sure you measure everything to be sure you buy the correct sized curtains and rods before you start a project like this.
