Many of us have fallen into the trap of thinking that we need to buy certain household essentials in order to maintain a clean and organized home. However, the truth is that many of these products are not only unnecessary, but they can also be a waste of money. In fact, some of the items that we consider to be must-haves can actually be harmful to both our wallets and the environment. Here at Home Addict, we’ll take a closer look at some of the common household essentials that you may want to think twice about purchasing. Expensive Cleaning Products

It may be tempting to buy name-brand cleaning products, especially if they’re associated with some of your favorite celebrities. But basic household essentials like vinegar, salt, baking soda, and lemon can effectively clean many surfaces and are much cheaper than specialty cleaning products. (They’re also more eco-friendly, too). Some expensive cleaning products claim to have additional benefits, such as “all-natural” or “organic” ingredients, but there is often little scientific evidence to support these claims. Not only that, but in many cases, store-brand or generic cleaning products can perform just as well as their expensive brand-name counterparts. Dollar Tree brand cleaning products, for example, are just $1.25 each and they do exactly what the expensive brands can do. Many expensive cleaning products contain similar ingredients to their budget-friendly alternatives, and the additional cost may not reflect any significant difference in quality.

One of the household essentials that almost everyone on the planet buys is paper towels. However, reusable cloth towels are a more cost-effective alternative. Cable TV packages with a large number of channels can be significantly more expensive than basic packages, too. Many popular shows and movies are available for streaming online, eliminating the need for cable TV altogether. Subscribing to streaming services can offer a more cost-effective and convenient way to access content. Depending on the cable package, it costs anywhere from $20 to $80 per month. Compare that to Netflix, which costs just $10 a month for their basic plan. On top of that, YouTube is completely free to watch.

High-end bed sheets may be more comfortable, but mid-range or budget-friendly sheets can be just as soft and durable and save you money. For many people, the added cost may not be worth it, especially if they don’t notice a significant difference in comfort or quality. After all, comfort is subjective. What one person finds comfortable may not be the same for another. Many expensive bed sheets may not last as long as their less expensive counterparts. Higher prices do not always equate to longer lifespan, and you may find yourself having to replace your bed sheets more frequently.

This can add up over time, especially if you use spices frequently. Pre-packaged spices often come in small containers that generate a significant amount of waste. Overall, it’s much better to buy a large container of a spice you’ll use in multiple dishes. Or, buy a combination spice like “Italian Seasoning”, which blends together oregano, basil, thyme and rosemary.

Investing in a reusable coffee maker that uses ground coffee can save you money and reduce waste in the long run.

It’s rare for people to have landline phones anymore. With the widespread availability of mobile phones, many people no longer need a landline phone. Roughly 33% of American households still have landlines. You may be one of the households still paying for a service you don’t use. Unlike mobile phones, landline phones are tied to a specific location and cannot be easily carried with you. This limits their usefulness, especially for people who are frequently on the go. There are alternative options for landline service, such as internet-based phone services (VoIP) that are less expensive and offer more functionality than traditional landline phones. My parents transferred their old landline number to a VoIP service. They like to keep the number active, just in case family or friends decide to call the old number.

Expensive storage containers

For example, buying a sturdy dresser of drawers might be more useful than a bunch of containers on shelves.

When you’re grocery shopping for essentials, fruits and vegetables should always be on your list. However, a lot of people have the bad habit of buying pre-packaged produce. So on top of it being more expensive and wasteful, it’s also less healthy!

Store-brand or generic over-the-counter medications can often be just as effective as their brand-name counterparts and save you money. Brand-name medications are often more expensive than generic options, despite having the same active ingredients. Yes, the name brand gives more pills per box. But they are still charging 30 cents per pill, while the generic brand is just under 10 cents per pill. Both medications do the exact same thing. Sure, it’s slightly more inconvenient to buy multiple boxes when you’re sick. But during my last cold, I only needed to spend $2.50 on two boxes
