Are you tired of browsing through Pinterest and Instagram, only to find perfectly crafted and aesthetically pleasing DIY projects that make you feel like you could never be that talented? Well, fear not, because we’ve scoured the internet and found some of the most cringe-worthy DIY creations ever made. Enter the world of DIWHY, a subreddit dedicated to sharing the most hilariously bad do-it-yourself projects that will make you question the sanity of some people. From poorly executed home repairs to bizarre furniture creations, these DIY failures will leave you laughing (and sometimes cringing) for hours. Just be warned, once you start scrolling, it’s hard to stop. And who knows, you might just get inspired to create your own DIY fail that will go viral on the internet.

Bathtub Couch

Well, it looks like someone took the phrase “sofa so good” a little too seriously and turned their bathtub into a couch. And by “good,” we mean “awful.” This DIY creation is the perfect combination of discomfort and confusion. It also raises so many questions. Why did they choose a bathtub as the base? Did they forget that couches are supposed to be comfortable? And most importantly, what possessed them to even think that this was a good idea? We’re not sure if we want to sit on it or run away screaming. Either way, this DIY project is definitely one for the books (or should we say, one for the trash). The fact that they’re asking $1,500 for this is crazy.

Carpet Pedals For Barefoot Riding

Ah, the innocence of youth. It’s amazing what kind of ideas can pop into a kid’s head when left unsupervised. Take for example, this DIY project by a young boy who decided that the pedals on his bicycle were too harsh on his delicate little feet. His solution? Cover them with carpet, of course! We’re not sure what kind of carpet he used, but it definitely doesn’t match the sleek, streamlined look of a bicycle. It’s more like a hodgepodge of shag, fuzz, and who-knows-what-else. And as for comfort, we’re guessing it’s about as comfortable as walking on a bed of nails. But hey, at least the kid has a unique ride that he can call his own. Who needs a fancy, expensive bike when you can have a carpet-covered, pedal-powered monstrosity?

The Watermelon Boy

Gamers will do just about anything to get their hands on the latest and greatest gaming console, even if it means making one out of a watermelon. Yes, you read that right, a watermelon. In what can only be described as the epitome of DIY gone wrong, someone decided to take a juicy, refreshing fruit and turn it into a console. We’re not sure what kind of games you could play on a watermelon console, but we’re guessing they involve a lot of sticky fingers and ruined controllers. And don’t even get us started on the potential for a sticky mess if someone accidentally spills their drink on it. We have to hand it to this person for their creativity, but maybe next time they should stick to something a little more practical, like building a fort out of cardboard boxes or making a costume out of duct tape.

Carpeted Toilet

Well, well, well, it looks like we have a true genius on our hands. In what can only be described as a prime example of DIY gone horribly wrong, some brilliant mind decided to cover their toilet in carpet. Because, you know, when you think “bathroom,” the first thing that comes to mind is “plush, shaggy carpet.” We have so many questions. Did they think this was a good idea for hygiene reasons? Did they not realize that carpet absorbs everything, including smells? And most importantly, did they not think about the fact that carpets and water do not mix? We can only imagine the horror that ensued when they discovered that their once fluffy carpet had turned into a soggy mess. We’re not sure what this person was thinking, but one thing’s for sure: they’re definitely full of…interesting ideas.

These Stairs

We’ve found the perfect DIY project for those who love tripping over their own feet! It seems that someone had the brilliant idea to convert desks into a staircase. Yes, you read that right: desks. Because when you’re thinking of a sturdy, reliable structure to support the weight of a human being, the first thing that comes to mind is particleboard and laminate. We’re not sure what kind of mind-bending math and physics went into this project, but the result is a staircase that looks like it could collapse at any moment. It’s like a game of Jenga, except instead of wooden blocks, you’re playing with people’s lives. We’re not sure if we want to walk up it even if you paid us. All we can say is, if you’re looking for a DIY project that’s both terrifying and impractical, this is the one for you!

A DIY Cane

Love is in the air. And in this case, it’s in the form of a DIY cane. That’s right, a woman decided to make a cane for her husband by nailing two pieces of wood together. Simple, right? Well, not so much. While we admire her dedication to making something for her husband, we have to question her carpentry skills. The two pieces of wood are different sizes and don’t even align properly, making the cane look like it’s had one too many drinks. We’re not sure how sturdy this cane is, but we’re guessing it’s about as reliable as a twig in a hurricane. But hey, at least the wife tried, right? We have to give her an A for effort and an F for execution. Maybe next time she should stick to making a card or a nice meal instead.

Cement Bread Coaster

Someone had the genius idea to take a piece of bread, cover it in cement, and use it as a table coaster. Because when you’re thinking of a material that’s absorbent, lightweight, and won’t scratch your table, the first thing that comes to mind is concrete. We have so many questions. Did they not have any actual coasters on hand? And most importantly, did they not realize that cement is not only heavy, but it also tends to crumble and flake off? We’re not sure what kind of reaction they were expecting from their guests, but we’re guessing it wasn’t “wow, this is such a creative and practical idea!” It’s a good thing they didn’t try to eat it, or else they might have ended up with some serious dental bills. Maybe next time they should stick to more practical DIY projects, like building a birdhouse or painting a picture.

A China Cabinet Made of Styrofoam

When it comes to DIY projects, we’ve seen some pretty unique materials used. But we have to say, the person who made a china cabinet out of a sheet of styrofoam takes the cake. Or in this case, takes the…air? We’re not sure what this person was thinking, but apparently, they thought that a material that’s notorious for being flimsy and crumbly would make a great cabinet. We’re not sure what they were trying to store in there, but we’re guessing it wasn’t anything heavy. And let’s not forget the aesthetics of this “cabinet.”It’s like the epitome of “shabby chic” – except without the chic part. We’re not sure if this person was trying to be ironic or just really, really cheap. But either way, we’re guessing their guests were a little…perplexed. Maybe next time they should invest in some actual furniture.

Deer Dollhouse

This is something you don’t see every day. It seems that someone has decided to make a dollhouse out of a deer. Yes, you read that right: a deer. We’re not sure what possessed this person to create such a bizarre and creepy DIY project, but one thing’s for sure, it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. The body has been adorned with miniature furniture and decorations. And let’s not forget the overall aesthetics of this “dollhouse.” It looks like something out of a horror movie, with its lifeless eyes. We’re not sure if this person was trying to be edgy or just really, really strange. But either way, we’re guessing they won’t be winning any interior design awards. Maybe next time they should stick to more traditional materials, like wood or fabric. Or just skip the DIY altogether and buy a pre-made dollhouse.

Credit: Reddit

The Car Seat Couch

Ah, the joys of DIY. It seems that someone has taken the phrase “reduce, reuse, and recycle” a little too far and decided to turn a van seat into a couch. And now, they’re trying to get rid of it on Facebook Marketplace. We have so many questions. Did they really think someone would want to buy a used van seat that’s been turned into a couch? We’re not sure what kind of market they’re aiming for, but we’re guessing it’s not the high-end furniture crowd. Maybe someone out there is looking for a conversation piece that’s also a back-breaker. But we’re guessing it’s a pretty small market. We have to hand it to this person for their creativity, but maybe next time they should stick to more practical DIY projects, like fixing a leaky faucet or painting a room. Or just stick to buying actual furniture.

Credit: Reddit

A Christmas Wreath Made Out of Blood Vials

Well, it seems that someone has decided to take the phrase “blood, sweat, and tears” to a whole new level by making a Christmas wreath out of blood vials. We’re not sure what kind of twisted holiday spirit possessed this person to create such a creepy DIY project. The wreath is made up of dozens of tiny vials. It looks like something out of a horror movie. We’re not sure if this person was trying to be edgy or just really, really strange. But either way, we’re guessing they won’t be winning any decorating awards. The only thing that would make sense is if they worked for a doctor’s office. Maybe next time they should stick to more traditional materials, like pinecones or tinsel. Or just skip the DIY altogether and buy a premade wreath.

I’m No Electrician, But…

Ah, the joys of DIY electrical work. It seems that someone has decided to take a cue from the “wing it and hope for the best” school of home improvement by attaching a light fixture to the drywall without actually wiring it properly. We’re not sure what kind of electrical code this person is following, but we’re guessing it’s not the one written by actual electricians. We’re not sure what kind of magic they’re hoping will power this light. Did they forget that light fixtures require electricity to work? And did they not realize that messing with electrical wiring is dangerous and can cause serious injury or even death? We’re not sure what this person was thinking, but one thing’s for sure, they won’t be winning any awards. Maybe next time they should just call a professional.

The Seatbelt Gate Lock

Well, someone has decided to put their old car parts to use by making a gate lock out of a seatbelt. We’re not sure what kind of security level this person was going for. The seat belt is buckled into place, effectively locking the gate. Or so they think. We’re not sure if this person realizes that seat belts are designed to hold people in place, not keep intruders out. Maybe this person was trying to be innovative, or just really, really cheap. Next time they should invest in an actual gate lock. At least that’s something that’s actually designed to keep people out. Even a child could open this gate. So the only things you’re effectively keeping out are animals.

Counter Stairs Hybrid

This person has killed “two birds with one stone” by building a staircase that goes over top of the kitchen counter. We’re not sure what kind of space-saving strategy they were going for, but we’re guessing it’s about as hygienic as licking a toilet seat. The counter, which is typically used for food preparation and cooking, is now a glorified footrest for anyone walking up the stairs. We’re not sure if this person was trying to be innovative or just really, really bizarre. Maybe next time they should just leave the stairs in their traditional location, away from the kitchen counter. This design would probably make it more difficult to sell the house later. And, it’s safe to say nobody else would want this in their house.

This One Hurts

A London family has taken the phrase “out with the old, in with the new” to a whole new level by turning a 250 year old Chinese vase into a lamp. And to add insult to injury, they drilled a hole in the bottom, effectively ruining its value. We’re not sure what kind of lighting needs they were trying to fulfill, but we’re guessing it wasn’t worth the cost of a priceless antique. The vase, which would have been worth $250,000, is now essentially worthless. Maybe next time they should stick to more practical lighting options, like a table lamp or a chandelier. Or just leave the antiques to the professionals.

One, Two… Draw!

The original caption of this photo says, “I know you believe that you’ve seen the worst shoes ever. But no. You haven’t.” Then, one of the comments says, “At first, I was like, okay revolver heels are kinda weird but you’re being a little harsh. And then I saw the true horror of these shoes.” These shoes truly look like something out of the Wild West gone wrong. The heels are made out of revolvers, and the foot part of the shoe is made from cow hooves. It’s so ugly. What would possess someone to make these? Hopefully they went in the trash.

Repurposed Jeans

It seems that someone is “going green” by repurposing denim jeans into planters in their garden. The jeans are now filled with dirt and serve as homes for plants. They’re standing upright in the garden, looking like legs that have sprouted from the ground. The jeans, which were probably once a fashionable item of clothing, are now a somewhat bizarre addition to the garden. We’re not sure if this person was trying to be trendy or just really, really frugal. Most would agree, these are hideous. And so disturbing to put in your garden. The top comment on Reddit simply says, “Mommy nature.” Get it? Like Mother Nature, but in Mom Jeans.

There’s a Waiting List

Someone invented a pipe that goes into the toilet, allowing men to pee without worrying about splashing. What kind of market were they aiming for? The pipe is designed to direct the flow of urine away from the edges, effectively eliminating the dreaded “splashback.” We’re not sure if this person was trying to be innovative or just really, really obsessed with pee. Apparently, there is a waiting list of people who are just dying to buy his DIY project. They also want people to measure their toilets, so ensure that the angles of the pipe go in just right. It’s seriously hard to believe that a lot of people want to buy this. But to each their own.

Shrek Incense Holder

Some people love Shrek a little too much. When I visited London back in 2020, I learned that British people are still obsessed with the character, even though it’s been years since the movie came out. So I guess it shouldn’t surprise me that someone made this Shrek incense holder, with the incense stick coming out of his butt. We’re not sure what kind of ambiance they were going for, but we’re guessing it’s about as sophisticated as a frat party. Maybe next time they should stick to more traditional incense holders, like a simple ceramic bowl or a wooden box.

The Double Decker Couch

Ah, the Double Decker Couch. It’s a DIY project that has gained a bit of notoriety thanks to the scene from The LEGO Movie. The idea is simple: take two couches and stack them on top of each other, creating a two-tiered seating area. It may seem like a good idea in theory. But in reality, the couch is incredibly awkward to get in and out of. And the person on the top level has to constantly worry about falling off. Maybe next time they should stick to more traditional seating options, like a loveseat or a recliner. Or just buy an actual bunk bed if they really want to stack things on top of each other. But this isn’t the first time we have shown the double decker couch before. Check out our list of Questionable Bachelor Pads that Give Us Hives.

Steel-Toed Crocs

Someone tried selling these on Facebook Marketplace saying, “Nice, rugged pair of Steel-Toed Crocs. New, only wore to work one day, got fired. Could really use the cash. $200 or best offer $100.” It’s a shame that someone got fired for wearing Steel-Toed Crocs. Unfortunately, they didn’t realize that they were breaking the company’s dress code policy. While the Steel-Toed Crocs may have been designed to protect the feet in hazardous work environments, they’re not the most stylish choice of footwear. Next time, it might be better to stick to more practical footwear options, like work boots or sneakers. If you try to search for Steel-Toed Crocs online, you can’t find them in an initial search. So this really was a DIY project gone very wrong. One of the top comments on Reddit said, “This man is either a god with a hammer or a bumbling fool. No in-between.”

When You Have Money, But No Land

This house is truly defying the laws of physics. It’s literally a house built on top of another house. A huge mansion is balanced on top of a narrow structure that was built underneath. But without a strong foundation, it looks as though it could fall over with the next strong wind. There is a man standing in front of the house, who we can only assume is the proud homeowner. In the comment section, people are comparing it to scenes out of a video game. Unfortunately we don’t have any more information on the house, but I’m sure it’s fascinating.

A Ruined Antique

The headline of the article that this image came from says, “New World Order. DIY fanatic proudly shows off her upcycled drinks trolley that gets absolutely savaged for ‘ruining an antique’.” As an antique lover, I’m equally disappointed in whoever did this. They basically stripped it of its value. And a piece that once had the potential to help give your home a Dark Academia vibe is now an ugly, kitschy mess. Here at Home Addict, we already have a list of vintage furniture that had been restored from the clutches of DIY folks. But there may be no going back for this globe. If you tried removing the paint, you would probably also take off the varnish and paint that created the globe maps in the first place. So this is doomed to be tossed in the trash one day.

Clearly a DIY Installation Job

Show me you did it yourself without telling me it was DIY. Clearly, this guy has never heard of a tape measure. Professionals know that you need to measure the space for kitchen cabinets before you order and install them. And even if the wrong size was purchased, it’s possible to return it. No one in their right mind would just go ahead and install the sink at an angle like that. It looks horrible, and it’s going to make it really difficult for these homeowners to sell the house when they’re ready to move. Plus, I’m sure their friends make jokes every time they come over.

The Laptop Was Getting Too Hot

I’m truly horrified by this picture. Especially since these holes were drilled in by a repair guy, and not the owner. Anybody would be furious if someone destroyed their property like that. Pulling a total Karen on them would be understandable. This damage to property is not an appropriate response – especially from a supposed professional. There are so many external laptop fans on the market that they could have recommended instead of drilling holes in the laptop. So this was totally unnecessary. Now, the laptop has a million holes in it, and there is no going back. We wonder what the owner did to rectify the situation, or if they simply posted it on Reddit for the world to see.

Spam Shot Glass

There are very few images that are truly gag-worthy. But this is one of them. Someone thought it was a good idea to hollow out a piece of solid SPAM from the can, and turn it into a shot glass. Why in the world would you want a meaty tasting drink? Most people don’t even like eating SPAM normally. So the idea of this is just absurd. In the photo, the text says, “I went camping and forgot to bring a shot glass. Then there is a reply that says, “That is the second worst reason why anyone would carve a hole in a block of SPAM.”

Credit: Reddit

DIY Roller Skates

The caption of this photo says, “Built my own skates instead of buying them.” A pair of roller skates costs around $50 to $70. But office chairs cost the same, if not more. So where is the logic? The only way you could be saving money is if the office was getting new chairs anyway, and they were going in the dumpster. So it’s a little recycling project. This DIY is so bad, it’s hard to take it seriously. It seems as if this girl just did this as a joke… hopefully. Because skating with chair wheels on your feet doesn’t seem like a safe thing to do.

No Lampshade? No Problem.

The caption of this photo said, “I didn’t have a lampshade, so I made one myself.” Our best guess is that this was done by a college kid… or it belongs on our list of Bachelor Pads That Make Our Eyes Bleed. (When you’re done reading this list, go check that one out. There is a guy who used a giant rubber ducky as his light fixture.) First of all, this guy stole a traffic cone off the street. Then, he shoved it into the ceiling without any regard for the exposed electrical wiring. He gets to bask in the ugly orange light coming out of the lampshade from now on. How many people make fun of him for it? Or some gullible hipster may think this is an edgy piece of decor.

Truck Hot Tub

This is perhaps one of the most silly Redneck Engineering projects we have ever seen. This person probably did this to save money… But is it really cheaper? Or was it an aesthetic choice? After doing some research, we found that the cost of a truck bed may be just a few hundred dollars at a scrapyard, but it can cost roughly $1,500 for a newer model. Hot tubs, on the other hand, average from $3,000 to $15,000. Walmart and Sam’s Club have inflatable hot tubs for under $400, which is roughly the same price they would have paid to install this truck bed hot tub. On one hand, the truck bed is flush with the porch. But it’s hard to imagine that it’s very comfortable.

Rejected Therapy Chairs

Out of all of the DIY fails on this list, this one is my favorite. The caption for the photo says, “Therapy chairs for childrens’ hospital were rejected. Wonder why?” That was sarcasm, probably. It’s obvious why these would be rejected. It’s impossible to clean a chair made up of stuffed animals. And as someone else pointed out in the comments, it’s like sensory overload for a little kid. Maybe if they had an autism diagnosis, it might be too distracting for them to handle. Whoever made these had the best intentions at heart. But now they’re stuck with these very weird pieces of furniture, which we can only assume they were trying to sell online.

The Dread Bed

Rastafarians love to wear their hair long in dreadlocks. In Rastafarianism, the hair is considered a symbol of strength, spirituality, and connection to God, also known as Jah. Rastafarians believe that their hair should not be cut, and they let it grow naturally into long, matted coils. Some people like to follow that style, even if they’re not a Rasta. A lot of people who followed the style without the spiritual belief attached will eventually get tired of their dreadlocks and cut them off. For most, it was just a phase. (Especially if they aren’t Rastafarian.) But it takes years to grow dreadlocks. So it’s sort of understandable to feel sentimental. This person decided to turn their dreadlocks into a pet bed. To me, this is cringeworthy, because it’s literally a bed made out of human hair.

How Long Before They Rot?

I’m assuming that this was originally posted on Facebook Marketplace. The caption on the photo says, “My wife made special Italian style Christmas spaghetti ornaments. They’re fairly cheap, at $5 each. Let me know if you’re interested. Thanks. (They’re sealed with epoxy so they won’t smell.)” Yikes. It doesn’t matter if it won’t leak. The food is still going to go moldy inside of the ornament. And it’s not even cute. Even if you had an Italian themed Christmas tree, you’d probably not want these. On the bright side, this guy is at least a very supportive husband for posting his wife’s craft project online. In the end, love wins. So that’s all that matters.

Credit: Reddit

Curtains Made From Tape Measures

This project seems sort of clever, but it’s also very stupid. Someone decided to create a room divider by purchasing multiple tape measures, attaching them to the wall, and extending the tape down to the floor. So you can extend the tape as long as you want. This lets you make different patterns with the tape. Sure, it’s kind of cooler than having a traditional curtain. But if you worked in this office, you would quickly get tired of this. And it was probably a lot more expensive to put together than just hanging up a traditional curtain. This is a total DIY fail in our book.

It Feels Like You Would Expect

Some people swear by stepping on a tennis ball to improve circulation and stimulate blood flow to the arch of your feet. There are actually several different types of pain-relieving things you can do with tennis balls. So, it’s kind of logical. There is an actual purpose behind this chair. But when it’s taken out of context and used as decor in a juice shop, it’s truly random. The caption of this photo said, “Saw this at a juice shop. Sat in it for a little bit. Feels exactly how you’d expect.” Maybe they put it there as an Instagram-worthy thing for people to photograph. Otherwise, it was just a weird decision to put it in a retail setting.

Hiding Behind a Facade

The caption of this photo says, “NOT A MOVIE SET! I have been so fascinated by this house for years and they finally took down the facade THE DAY AFTER I GOT A GOOD PICTURE! Had to share!” Wow, this is truly crazy. It’s like they wanted a new house without actually paying for the full construction price. But what do their friends and family think when they come over to visit? One of the top comments said, “Not sure where this is but in DC lots of developers do this. If you tear down an entire building, it’s a new development. If you tear down everything except the facade and a foot of wall on either side it’s a “renovation” and taxed way lower.” You learn something new every day.

Life-Sized Cat Men

We saved the absolute best (or worst) for last. It really speaks for itself. This life sized cat man is like something out of the creepy movie version of Cats (2019) that everyone hated. This came from a post on Facebook. The text reads, “After all these years, they’re finally finished! Three life size cat-men, made from discarded cat hair, semi precious gemstones, and melted crayons. They are currently displayed in the furthest edge of my backyard, near the woods. If you would like to schedule a time to come see them in person, please DM me. (The best time to see them is just as the sun is setting.)” How many people took her up on her offer? And how well are these statues going to fare under the elements of nature?
