43. Declutter and Organize

Sometimes, we can feel sick and tired of our space simply because it’s messy. You might look around and feel disgusted with the amount of clutter that you see on a day-to-day basis. But in reality, you don’t need a new home, because clutter can appear literally anywhere. In fact, when you pack up those same things and move somewhere else, the clutter might actually get worse. It’s better to learn how to organize your space first, rather than starting new.

Let’s face it, organizing can be really difficult. That’s why some people will go as far as to hire a professional organizer to help clean their home for them. Lucky for you, we already have a whole list of Little But Life Changing Home Organization Hacks for you to read. (Once you’re done with this article, of course.)

42. Do Some Renter-Friendly Rehab

For many of you out there, you’re living in an apartment or rented house. This means that you’re limited as to how many changes you can make to your space without losing your security deposit. Don’t worry, though. There are a lot of things you can do to your space without damaging it. For example, you can use peel-and-stick tiles in your bathroom that are removable. And even if a project is permanent, sometimes you can simply ask your landlord’s permission to do a project, and they may say “yes” if you’re lucky.

Many of you will not be sure where to get started with a renter-friendly project. Here at Home Addict, we already did a whole list about Ways to Decorate an Apartment Without Losing a Security Deposit that you can check out once you’re done with this list.

41. Identify Your “Pain Points”

Before you sell your home or move to a new apartment, get together with your partner and make a list of what you would love to have in a “dream home”. Also make a list of the things that bother you in your current space, or non-negotiables about conditions you would never want to live in. Once you have this list, ask yourself if any of the pain points can be fixed. Is it really necessary to move? Or can changes be made that would convince you to stay?

This process is done on the HGTV show “Love it or List It”. After a rehab project that fixes their pain points, many couples choose to stay in their home rather than sell it. You don’t need a camera crew and a huge budget to do the same in your own life. If it helps, check out an episode on YouTube so you can see the process. (via Love it or List It)

40. Build a Fence

Sometimes, you can hate your outdoor space because you don’t feel like you have any privacy. It’s hard to enjoy life when your nosy neighbors are staring at you. This happens if there seems to be no boundary between your property and the neighbors. And even if there is some sort of boundary like a chain link fence, there is still a lack of privacy. So you should consider building a privacy fence.

Keep in mind that privacy fences can cost thousands of dollars. Sometimes, a cheaper and more eco-friendly alternative would be to plant large privacy trees, like pine or arborvitae. However, even the plants can cost hundreds or even over $1,000 depending on how many you need to buy in order to get the amount of privacy you want. And, of course, if you buy small trees, it will take years for them to grow. (via Gardening Know How)

39. Install New Lighting

Good lighting is absolutely everything. It can completely change your mood when you walk into a room. And it even affects your selfie game! Natural light is always the best. So if you can start opening your curtains and letting in more sunlight, that would be best. But if you don’t have many windows, or it’s still dark at night, you need to fix your lighting.

Sometimes, brighter light bulbs make all the difference in the mood of a room. Credit: Shutterstock

Sometimes, it’s as easy as changing the lightbulbs. Other times you should buy new lamps or change your entire light fixture. If possible, hire an electrician to install a dimmer and a new chandelier. This way, you have the option between a bright or dimly lit room. Once the lighting has changed, you should immediately notice a change in the mood, and it might make you want to stay in your house a bit longer. (via Home Depot)

38. Give Your Rooms a Fresh Coat of Paint

Sometimes, a fresh coat of paint is all you need to feel like a room is brand new. Typically, the lighter the color, the bigger the room feels. It can also help with your mood if you walk into a room with neutral colors like white or beige. Of course, you can choose any paint color you want. But if you want to pick something bold and dramatic, try doing an accent wall before you commit to an entire room.

If you’re renting, keep in mind that your landlord probably has rules about paint colors. Just make sure you are able to paint it back to the appropriate color before your lease is up. 37. Pressure Wash the House

Over time, the outside of a house will get dirty. Green algae can build up, or general dirt and grime with discolor a house over the years. Some people let it go for so long, they practically forget what it looked like before, and overlook the fact that it looks really bad. This can be remedied by simply renting a pressure washer from your local hardware store like Lowes or Home Depot. Once you wash down a house, it looks practically brand new.

Before you go about pressure washing a house, look at some video tutorials online. Never point the pressure washer at another person, because it’s so powerful, it can cause injury. All in all, it’s a really affordable way to make your exterior siding look brand new. (via Lowes)

36. Paint the Exterior Siding

If power washing doesn’t do the trick, you may need to go the extra step to paint or even replace the exterior siding on your house. This is not cheap, and you may need to hire a professional if you’re thinking about replacing it. But the good news is that you can often replace it piece-by-piece, so you may be able to fix a few damaged pieces and leave the rest intact.

According to A1 Everlast, exterior siding should last between 20 to 40 years. So if you need to replace it, you’re really putting in a good investment into your home. Plus, there’s nothing like having a fresh coat of paint on your home to make you feel like you have a whole new place. (via A1 Everlast)

35. Rehab the Kitchen

One of the biggest things on everyone’s dream home list is to have a brand new kitchen. It’s also one of the most expensive things you can do. And unfortunately, it doesn’t really add enough home value to make up for the cost. According to USA Cabinet Store, “So far, the industry’s standard ROI for mid-range kitchen makeover falls between 50% to 60% of your overall budget for remodeling. For instance, if you spent $69,000 redoing your kitchen, then you can expect to recoup around $34,500 to $41,400.”

With that being said, a lot of people find a deep sense of satisfaction in remodeling their kitchen. After all, the kitchen is the heart of the home for a lot of people. They cook, entertain, and spend a ton of time living there. So for you, it just might be the project you need to do in order to feel like you would rather keep your home instead of moving. 34. Buy New Furniture

At the end of the day, a room is just four walls. It really matters more what you put into it. And if your furniture is old and outdated, that could be at the core of why you’re unhappy with your living space. Buying new furniture could be the key to wanting to keep your home instead of selling it. New furniture doesn’t have to cost a fortune, either. You can search thrift stores, or go online with Facebook Marketplace. There might even be a good deal at a yard sale if your neighbors are moving.

Another option would be to paint or reupholster your existing furniture. This can cost a lot of money if you hire a professional. At that point, you might as well buy a new couch. However, if you’re able to sew, and you’re willing to teach yourself a few tricks online, this could be an epic DIY project. There are loads of tutorial videos on YouTube out there that will help you learn how to rehab your existing furniture into something fabulous. (via BYOT)

32. Re-Arrange Your Rooms

Sometimes, you feel uncomfortable in a space because it wasn’t well thought-out. Maybe you feel cramped, or there is just an awkward room in the house that doesn’t feel right. Some homes even have a room that ends up becoming a dumping ground for storage, even though its original purpose was completely different. Ask yourself if it’s possible to re-arrange your rooms for different purposes. Maybe turn a second bedroom into a home office, or vice versa.

When you go through the process of rearranging a room, you’re most likely going to find some things that you’ll be willing to donate to your local thrift store, or throw away completely. It’s a great way to purge things you don’t really need. You can also rearrange the layout of a room without changing the purpose of the room completely. That’s still challenging, but often worth it in in the end. (via Parachute)

31. Build a New Addition

If you have the budget available, adding a new addition to your home can be a great way to feel great about where you live. You could add on a new bedroom, garage, bathroom, office, or anything you want. Added square footage also increases the value of your home overall when you’re ready to sell it down the line.

A master bedroom suite costs about $21,000-$63,000 on average, depending on the size and extent of the addition.” They also say that it adds enough value to the home that you will recuperate 53% of the cost. Even small changes, like this vanity, make a huge difference in style. Credit: Shutterstock

Or, you can go big and do a complete makeover. According to Bob Vila, “Bathroom remodels have some of the highest return on investment of any work you can do in your home, but tight spaces and high-end finishes can drive up the project price. The average national cost of a bathroom remodel is $10,978, but can range between $6,152 and $16,615.” (via Bob Vila)

Solar panels are an investment in lower energy cost for your family. Credit: Shutterstock

28. Install Solar Panels

Tired of paying huge electricity bills every month? It’s actually more affordable to install solar panels than you might think. In many states, there are programs available to help give you free or discounted solar panels as an incentive to “go green”. (However, nothing is actually “free”. You may need to pay the cost to install a new roof, for example.) According to Market Watch, the national average of $16,000 to $21,000.

It may cost less than you would imagine to install solar panels. Credit: Shutterstock

Once you get solar panels installed, you have two options. If you own them outright, you can save the energy on something like a Tesla battery, and have 100% free energy. But if you agree to lease the panels through a company, then you will pay a flat fee in the ballpark of $150 per month no matter what, plus get money back for the extra power used. Every program is different, so do your research! (via Market Watch)

If this sounds like you, your backyard might need some serious landscaping. Once you have some flowers, trees, and plants in your backyard, it becomes a much more attractive and personalized space for you to be in. Landscaping isn’t just for your benefit, either. It can increase the value of your home.

19. Upgrade Your Closet

If you don’t have a good closet in your house, it can be really frustrating. Or, even if you have a big, spacious closet, it may be lacking in organization. That’s why it may be a good idea to upgrade your closet with a shelving system. This will help you keep your clothes neat and clean, and it helps you find things more easily compared to keeping them in a set of drawers.

One of the most popular places to buy shelving systems for your closet is Ikea. They sell all shapes and sizes to fit almost any home. However, they’re not the only option. 14. Try Out Semi-Permanent Wallpaper

Wallpaper can be a great way to update your room and make it feel like a completely different space. However, a lot of people are afraid to use wallpaper because they don’t want to damage the walls. This is perfect for anyone who wants to experiment with color and pattern but your afraid of damaging the walls.

13. Give Your Basement a Makeover

For those of you out there who are lucky enough to have a cement basement (instead of a dirt crawl space) that means you have the option of giving it a makeover. A lot of people use their basement as a second living room, game room, guest room, or even an apartment to rent for extra income. Adding this extra square footage to your home will also help to increase the value of your house, and it helps with resale if you decide to do that late.

12. Build a Man Cave or a She Shed

Sometimes, all you need to feel happier in your home is a place to call your own. That’s why so many people will build a “man cave” or a “she shed”. This doesn’t have to literally be a shed in the backyard (though a lot of people have done this.) It could be a guest room transformed into a craft room. Or maybe your basement can be turned into a bar and gaming center for the guys.

Once you have a space to call your own, you can retreat there whenever you need a minute to be alone. In a lot of cases, once you have this space, you may not want to move away after all. 11. Swap Out Faucets

Similar to swapping out your knobs, getting new faucets will make a huge difference. Check out the faucets you currently have in your bathroom and kitchen. Do they have tiny rust spots? They’re so small, you might not notice with the naked eye. But even if it goes unnoticed on a daily basis, your guests will probably see it. And it gives you this subconscious vibe of disgust when you go to wash your hands.

The good news is that faucets are inexpensive, and easy to install by yourself, if you happen to like doing your own work. This can be a really cool opportunity to add a unique twist in a small way. For those of you who own a house, you may be considering if you should sell it or not. But if you have a backyard, consider building a guest house to bring in some extra income. Yes, it costs a lot to build a guest house. But the investment may be worth it if you can make a profit on the rental income. Here at Home Addict, we already wrote a list including all of the reasons you may want to build a tiny house: 40 Reasons to Jump on the Tiny Living Train.

9. Install Wainscoting

Similar to trim and molding, wainscoting tends to elevate a space, even when it’s an empty room. The difference is that wainscoting takes up half or the entire wall with wood trim. If you happen to be handy, you can install wainscoting yourself. There are many tutorials online that will help teach you how to do it on your own.

8. Create a Home Office Space

We now live in a world where a lot of people work remotely, or they have a hybrid work situation. If you haven’t already created a home office, then you might want to consider building one. 7. Buy a Kitchen Island

If you’re thinking about remodeling your kitchen, an island may be all you need. It gives you additional storage and seating space in one. And it looks so stylish and luxurious, it instantly elevates the look of a space. This is especially true if you install an island made with marble or any other stone top.

According to Nerd Wallet, “While adding an island to your existing kitchen design can be costly, the project is relatively inexpensive when compared with a full kitchen remodel. Kitchen islands cost an average of $3,000 to $5,000”. There are some people out there who have created their own kitchen islands for under $1,000. You just need to have some skills in woodworking. 5. Buy Statement Pieces

Earlier on this list, we already suggested buying art, or even making a gallery wall. But there is something else you can do to elevate your space even further. Statement pieces are objects in your home that look artistic, even if they’re just everyday things. They really stand out and say a lot about your personality.

Usually, your eyes will immediately go to a statement piece when you walk into a room. Think about a room with a huge, fancy chandelier or an unexpected statue sitting in the corner. Then, the eye will travel across the room from there. You really only need one statement piece per room, unless you’re a maximalist. (via Hadley Court)

1. Upgrade Heating or AC

Something that a lot of homeowners let slide is getting their HVAC serviced regularly. They’re supposed to have it repaired at least once a year. And according to Energy Air, “The Department of Energy recommends homeowners replace their HVAC system every 10 to 15 years. Modern air conditioners are durable, but their major components will begin to deteriorate after around ten years depending on how often you use and maintain them.”

“According to HomeAdvisor, full HVAC unit replacement costs range from $5,000 to $10,000, with the national average at $7,000. This comes out to about $25 to $60 per square foot. Prices depend on the size and brand of the HVAC system, the size of the house, ductwork length, and the new unit’s efficiency rating.” (via Bob Vila)
