Indiscriminate Splashing in the Philippines
The Filipino celebration of San Juan, held every year on June 24th, is an unusual event that involves the whole community. During the festival, people take to the streets and splash water at each other, including random strangers passing by. While it may seem strange to those unfamiliar with the tradition, the festival is a way for locals to celebrate the feast day of St. John the Baptist and to cool off during the hot summer months. The occasion brings everyone together, regardless of age or social status, and the laughter and fun are contagious. If you happen to be in the Philippines in June, don’t be surprised if you get splashed with water – it’s all part of the celebration!
