In India, parents have a mix of Western influence and cultural values. They believe they can shape a child’s personality by teaching them the right values, while also giving them gender-specific roles. For starters, they believe in co-sleeping with their children, which is when the child shares a bed with the parent. While this is common during a child’s infant years in America, Indian parents continue this trend well past infancy.
They believe it’s neglectful when a child sleeps in a different room than their parents. Once they grow up, the child might even sleep with their grandparents. The room is furnished with many beds and mats, so the family is in the same room all together. There’s also a lot of academic pressure for Indian children to be at the top of their class. Parents believe they need to be the perfect role model for their children and to shield them from any negative experiences (K8 School).
